If you’re in the area you have to check out the Akita museum of Art. Designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, the museum is one of the most striking buildings you’ll come across in the area. Inside however is just impressive, hosting a massive collection of work by Tsuguharu Fujita aka Leonard Foujita, Japan's most famous Western style painter. The gallery is also home to what’s reputed to be the world's largest canvas painting, Fujita’s “Events of Akita” which sits at a staggering 3.65 metres by 20.5 metres. Depicting traditional Akita life through its seasonal transitions, it’s a work that truly has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Beyond Fujita’s masterpiece, the space displays a vast collection of work by local artists and obviously some of the most incredible architecture in the region.

    Kubota Castle

What to Do While Visiting Akita City

While most castles are famous for what they have, Kubota Castle is actually famous for its lack of architectural norms. Built without a main tower or stone walls, this iconic building is one of Akita’s must not miss historical stop offs. It was once the home to the famous samurai family the Satake clan during 1604 - 1880. These days the castle hosts a history museum and a pretty impressive view as this stunning hirayama-style castle was built on a 40-metre (130 ft) hill on the left bank of the Omono River (Asahi River).

    Kiritanpoya

Kiritanpo is essentially the nationally recognized food of Akita, and there’s no better place to try it than at Kiritanpoya. For those unfamiliar with kiritanpo, it’s freshly cooked rice that has been formed into mochi style cylinders around cedar skewers, and toasted over an open hearth. Often served dango style with sweet miso or in soups it’s the area’s unique version of mochi. Here at Kiritanpoya the best way to try kiritanpo is with a lunch set, where you can enjoy the classic local dish alongside a selection of seasonal sides.
