More and more these days restaurant owners are coming up with new ideas to enhance your eating experience. In Tokyo, this ranges from concepts that have been around for some time such as the sushi train and themed cafes to more recent appearances of restaurants that involve eating mysterious dishes in a pitch black room. The brainchild behind the newest addition is Ryotaro Muramatsu, artist and director of NAKED Inc., who has set out to prove that food can be enhanced and turned into a whole new experience with the help of art and technology.

Opening its doors to the public on July 28, 2017, the Yoyogi Park branch of TREE by NAKED is the second of the Tokyo stores after the Marunouchi branch with another shop soon to be opened in Tajimi not far from Nagoya City. Seated in a room with just eight chairs, the well looked after handful of guests are served up a delectable six-course meal that is worth the rather pricey 15,000 yen price tag in itself. Taking inspiration from the interestingly translated theme “Scenes of Life”, the dining room is filled with Projectionions reminiscent of nature and the beginning of the world.

With NAKED Inc. at the helm, this is no shoddy light show but an impressive display of carefully thought out artwork that makes use of virtual reality technology and Projectionion mapping. With the Projectionions selected to complement the intricately prepared dishes, this experience is said to be one that stimulates creativity while discovering a whole new appreciation for food.

The combination of art, food, and technology is nicely concluded with a sweet treat in the form of French-style desserts created with the help of Omotesando’s Parisian patisserie Hugo & Victor.

Planted alongside Yoyogi Park, TREE by NAKED has quickly become a popular central spot to test out this new breed of restaurant. This branch of the restaurant only offers evening meals with two seatings per day, although the Marunouchi shop is open from 10am - 9pm for those looking for a daytime visit. With limited seating, it’s necessary to make a reservation well in advance to guarantee you one of those precious seats which is the perfect end to a day out in the bustling Harajuku area.
