Farm Tomita

In 1903 a man by the name of Tokuma Tomita, the first generation of the Tomita line, travelled to Furano from Fukui prefecture and began plowing the fields in a scenic location with a backdrop of the inspiring Tokachi Mountain Range – the very same spot where Farm Tomita can be found today.

  • Tokuma Tomita, the essential founder of Farm Tomita, was the grandfather of Tadao Tomita – the man responsible for launching Farm Tomita’s lavender cultivation in 1958. In 1976, the lavender fields of Farm Tomita were chosen as a feature image in the JR calendar which was distributed throughout Japan. This led to a surge in tourism with people the nation over curious to see the beautiful fields of lavender with their own eyes.

In 1980, Farm Tomita launched its production of original lavender essential oils, made in a distillery designed by Tadao Tomita himself. The Farm went on to produce its first original perfume, the aptly named Furano, four years later. Following the success of Furano, Farm Tomita expanded into producing original bathroom soaps, and went on to win the prestigious first prize at the Lavender Perfume Fair in France in 1990.

Today the farm’s popularity only seems to grow by the year. The popular Farm Tomita has no entry fee and, besides the wonderful natural splendour of the flower field landscapes, also has a number of cafes and shops that sell a rich assortment of lavender related goods including the iconic and super tasty lavender cream puffs. As well as the famous lavender soft cream ice cream, there are a number of other great flavours on offer using ingredients direct from the farm itself, including rich Hokkaido milk vanilla, and sweet orange Hokkaido melon flavours. A special limited edition summer exclusive flavour is also available at Farm Tomita and is very popular with visitors – lavender white chocolate.

The farm’s popular café also serves warm, hearty meals made fresh from locally sourced ingredients of Furano. The Hokkaido seasonal vegetable curry on rice and the crispy croquette burger of Hokkaido made with Danshaku potatoes are especially popular amongst hungry visitors, and perfectly washed down with a refreshing Lavender soda. The Furano sweetcorn and the Hokkaido milk corn chowder are also worth an honorable mention.

Approximately four kilometers from the location of Farm Tomita is a second farm called ‘Lavender East’ – opened by Tomita Farm in 2008 in order to keep up with the growing number of visitors. Lavender East is the biggest lavender field in Furano and covers 14 hectares. It features a serene observation deck, a café, and a gift shop. Farm Tomita and Lavender East are connected by a 15 minute ‘Lavender Bus’ which takes riders on a scenic journey through the splendid flower fields.

Tomita Farm is so popular with Japanese and international guests alike that a temporary train station opens up every year from June to September just to serve the farm. The temporary station is called Lavender Batake. When it is closed the closest station to Farm Tomita is JR Naka-Furano.
