Eating Soft Cream in Furano

Furano is known for its sweeping flower fields and downhill cross country skiing, but another famous trademark of the town is its delicious soft cream ice cream. The most famous of Furano soft cream ice cream flavours is the smooth and creamy lavender soft cream which can be found at Furano’s Farm Tomita, and is best enjoyed whilst taking in an attractive view of the numerous lavender fields of the area.

  • The lavender soft cream of Furano is especially significant to the recent history of Hokkaido as lavender has been cultivated throughout Japan’s northernmost island for more than half a century. The sweeping fields of lavender attract hordes of tourists every summer to experience the spectacular sight of lavender in full bloom.

Farm Tomita is arguably the best spot in all of Furano for which to enjoy the lavender fields whilst enjoying a freshly made lavender soft cream produced on site using only the freshest ingredients. With the sweeping flower fields set amongst a backdrop of the inspiring Tokachi mountain range, a day at Tomita Farm is a great way to unwind and fully embrace the beauty of nature – and the deliciousness of Furano soft cream.

Another great place to experience the creamy specialty ice cream of Furano is Popura Farm, which features a quaint road side café with a wonderful view of lavender fields, and the perfect location for enjoying another local specialty – melon soft cream served inside an actual melon – a particularly refreshing treat in the summer, but still extremely enjoyable as a nice winter indulgence- and a perfect Instagram opportunity year-round.

Popura Farm’s special melon on melon soft cream is known as ‘Santa de Melon’, whilst vanilla soft cream on melon is known as ‘Santa no Hige’ or ‘Santa’s Beard’. Another interestingly named yet equally delicious menu item on offer is the vanilla soft cream topped with chocolate sauce curiously named ‘Godzilla no Hige’. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy why not try the ‘Santa no Heso’ – vanilla soft cream and sweet red beans. Popura Farm also offers the option of substituting the cantaloupe melon base for soft freshly baked doughnut – oishii. The friendly staff and clean, welcoming atmosphere make Popura Farm a wonderful spot for enjoying the splendid soft cream on offer.

Furano is so crazy about its soft serve that there’s even a famous ramen restaurant in town which offers ramen flavoured soft cream. Perfect for the punter looking to really push their taste buds to new and exciting places.
