Expand your mind at the Ainu museum

The Ainu are the native people of Hokkaido. Since the Japanese occupation of Hokkaido, there has remained very little obvious evidence of their existence in the land, and this is why places like the Ainu museum are so important in preserving the history of a culture lost to modernity. The small museum is run by real Ainu, and is the perfect place to learn about a very important slice of Hokkaido’s history. The museum is English friendly and built in the traditional Ainu style, and is actually the oldest historical museum about Ainu, running since 1916 when it was built by Kawamura Kaneto, an Ainu chief.
