The Asahidake Ropeway in Daisetsuzan National Park connects visitors from Asahidake Onsen to within a two-hour hike of Mount Asahidake’s summit, the tallest mountain in Hokkaido. The ropeway’s upper station sits at a lofty 1600 metres above sea level and provides a wondrous view of the treeless alpine tundra, whilst alpine flowers bloom as far as the eye can see in the summer.

A particularly inviting 30-60 minute hiking trail for beginners can be found around the ropeway’s upper station. The spherical track covers ponds and sulphurous vents – a testament to the whole of Daisetsuzan’s volcanic origin.

Those seeking a bit more of a challenge and adventure can ascend to the summit of Mount Asahidake, a hike which takes approximately two hours from the upper station of the Asahidake Ropeway. A further 1-2 day trail for advanced hikers continues from the summit of Asahidake and travels through to the summit of Mount Kurodake, which then leads to the relaxing Sounkyo Onsen. Mount Asahidake is the first place in all of Japan to experience the autumn colours and first snows. A flurry of visitors flock to see the beautiful in bloom foliage from mid-September, whilst skiers come in droves from December to early May.

The ropeway station itself features a specialty shop which sells confections from across Hokkaido, as well as some exclusive Asahidake products including beer, cookies, and various other trinkets. The food corner also sells fresh local specialties such as delicious deer sausage and Tokachi milk ice cream. The base station restaurant also features curry made with fresh seasonal vegetables from the local Higashikawa area – the most popular dish in the restaurant. Whilst further up at the summit station shop, one can purchase a number of other specialty goods including the exclusive Asahikawa Ropeway mountain croquette – which goes down a treat with the organic coffee, freshly brewed with meltwater from Asahidake. The mountain croquette can only be bought on the upper station of Asahidake ropeway, and is made using locally grown mountain potatoes and locally grown beef.
