How to Join the Aomori Nebuta Festival

The Nebuta Festival in Aomori is one of the biggest festivals in all of Tohoku, attracting a crowd of over 3 million people every year. Despite this, it is also one of the easiest and most inviting festivals for those wanting to join in as an outside participant.

  • If you’re planning to join the hordes of dancers at the Nebuta Festival, there’s one rule that you need to be aware of and that is that all participants are expected to wear a haneto, a kind of yukata designed specifically for dancers in the Nebuta Festival.

A haneto also consists of an okoshi, a kind of slip that is worn underneath the yukata. Shorter than a regular yukata, a haneto usually has bells attached to it and a belt is tied around the waist. A tasukigake is worn over the belt, which is a sash that is used to hold up the sleeves of the haneto. On your feet you’ll most likely be wearing a pair of tabi socks and geta wooden sandals with your head beautifully decorated with a hanagasa, a flower hat. Haneto kits can be purchased at many shops all over town during the festival week. Expect to pay at least 10,000 yen or a bit more if you’re also wishing to purchase the flower hat.

If you feel that’s a bit too much money to spend just for the sake of a few hours of dancing at the festival, you’ll be pleased to hear that there are plenty of shops renting out haneto yukatas for as little as 2,500 yen.

Once you’re dressed and looking the part, you’re ready to go. The basic dance routine is extremely simple, and there’s plenty of room for individual improvisation. This festival is more about having as many people as possible participating and enjoying the mood, rather than a perfectly choreographed mass performance. If you think that sounds like fun, it’s definitely worth joining in for this unique experience.

The only thing you need to learn on top of this is the word “rassera”. Some sources claim that this is dialect for the word “irasshai”, an expression typically used to welcome customers to a shop. At the Nebuta Matsuri, “Rassera! Rassera!” is usually chanted over and over again by the participants, often first by an MC, then repeated by all the dancers as well as enthusiastic onlookers. This too, is very simple, and we are sure you’ll get the hang of it quickly. Just get your haneto, find a spot in the parade that’s open to outside participants, and dance the night away!
