Where to Go in the Mount Fuji Area

If you are an enthusiast for alluring flowers, the Yamanakako Flower Park is a must when traveling to the Fuji Five Lakes. The highlight here, of course, are the blooming flowers which, depending on the season, include tulips, poppies, zinnia, and sunflowers among other beauties. The park has a free flower-viewing field so you can just hang out with the flora for as long as you like. There is also a paid area with access to other leisure activities including a small water park, and the flower dome where kids and adults can gain insight into flower cultivation and ecology.

The Oshino Hakkai Springs are a set of ponds that are considered sacred, constituting an underwater system flowing directly from Mount Fuji. Besides their spiritual significance and, being yet another World Cultural Heritage Asset of the area, the water from the ponds have also played a role in world history; the water from the Wakuike Pond was carried into space in 1983 by the Space Shuttle Challenger as part of an experiment to make snow in outer space. You should set an hour of your day schedule to enjoy the ponds and try the local snacks sold at the old-fashion houses adorning the grounds.

Iyashi No Sato Nenba at Lake Saiko

Deep inside the Fuji Five Lakes area and off the shores of Lake Saiko the Iyashi No Sato Nenba is a reconstructed village of thatched roof houses where visitors can get handy and try out various traditional crafts, learn about Japanese traditions, and enjoy the local dishes at one of several restaurants. For a small fee you can walk up and down the hilly village and stop along the way to take in the scenic mountain views which, depending on the weather, can include Mount Fuji on the horizon.

Shiraito Falls

The Shiraito Falls are ranked among the most beautiful waterfalls in Japan and are a popular sightseeing destinations around Mount Fuji. The water stream comes from the melting snow at the top of the volcanic mountain and creates the dreamy falls which are at their strongest point during the summer season. Before reaching the waterfall, you’ll walk through a short path flanked by cafes and souvenir shops as well as the Otodomeno Falls which have a significant place in Japanese history books.
