Kawaguchiko’s Natural Living Centre
  • For visitors to Lake Kawaguchiko looking to enjoy nature and try out the fruit-related activities the area is known for, the Natural Living Centre on the north shore of the lake is the place to go. The centre acts as a sort of one-stop shop where people can relax with a coffee in hand in a flower garden with a lakeside view of Mount Fuji, put their jam-making skills to the test, and stock up on blueberries through a fruit picking experience.

The main attraction at Kawaguchiko’s Natural Living Centre is Oishi Park. This flower park borders Lake Kawaguchiko and adorns the outside of the centre with a wide variety of seasonal herbs and flowers. From early morning visitors arrive here to take in the unobstructed view of Mount Fuji at the other side of the lake. All throughout the day, people stroll around the 350 metres of the park and along the flower path where over 90 kinds of seasonal flowers can be seen over the four seasons. Oishi Park is also one of the two locations where from late June to mid July the annual Herb Festival is held when luscious lavender plants reach their full bloom creating one of the iconic scenes in the town.

Hanging out at Oishi Park is free of charge, as is the entrance to the Natural Living Centre building where visitors will find a souvenir shop packed with herbs and food products made within the centre or at nearby farms. There’s also a cafe which, among other things, sells a delicious blueberry soft cream which can be savoured while surround by the beautiful flowers in the park. From the shop, the best souvenir to take home is a jar of the centre’s own blueberry jam. You can purchase it for a very reasonable price, or if you are feeling crafty, you can sign up for the jam centre experience and create your own jam.

For 850 yen, you can join one of the seven daily jam-making sessions held at the centre’s kitchen every hour between 9 am and 4 pm, except for at noon. Prior reservation is usually required and during the summer months when the crowds are large it is recommended, but if you happen to stop by the centre and forgot to book your spot, just ask at the register and the staff might be able to add you to one of the 45-minute sessions. Before the workshop begins you can choose which jam flavour to make, although blueberries are their speciality as they are grown just down the street from the centre. An expert will guide you step-by-step through the jam-making process and once finished you’ll get a taste of your own creation before bottling and labeling your own jar to take away with you.

If you are more into fresh-picked fruit than the sweet jam, then the fruit picking experience is a good alternative offered by the Natural Living Centre. The centre coordinates with the neighbouring farms so that visitors can try out picking either cherries from late June to early July, or blueberries from early July to early August. The cherry picking and blueberry picking experiences come in at 2,000 yen and 1,000 yen respectively for adults. The trick here is that these are all-you-can-eat activities so you can only eat the fruit while you are there rather than taking it home with you. Enjoy the sweetness!
