  • When traveling to the Mount Fuji region with adventure in mind, people usually think of climbing the iconic volcano or camping on a lake shore with scenic panoramas. But if you go beyond, or above for that matter, you’ll find that paragliding is not only possible but is also one of the most thrilling ways to take in the wonderful scenery. Located on the Asagiri Kogen (Asagiri Highland), the Asagiri Kogen Paragliding School offers travelers the ticket to glide through the skies around Mount Fuji and over the stretch of farmland between Mount Kenashi and the foot of the volcano.

As a school, this paragliding facility offers half-day and full-day short courses, where beginners can get airborne with ease at the 22-foot hill near the school’s building. These short courses can also be combined with a tandem flight that will have you climb up the mountain to then paraglide down together with a qualified instructor. When time is of the essence, and you’re not an experienced paraglider, you can skip on the short flights and just join an instructor for the picturesque tandem flight.

Whatever flight option you choose from by making a prior appointment, the fun begins soon after you arrive at the paragliding school facility. The school not only caters to tourists but it is also a paragliding club with regular members so the flying community vibe is clear as you are getting set up for your flight. After filling out the necessary forms and going through some safety checks, a van will take you to the bottom of Mount Kenashi where a rustic train lift will take you slowly up the steep slopes to the flight deck. Although you are there to fly, the ride on the lift which will have you almost perpendicular to the ground and looking at the forest below, is a fun way to warm up to the experience at the top.

Once at the top, your instructor and flying partner will get you set up with the necessary equipment and give you a few tips to make it a smooth flight over the highland and back to the ground. The school throws in a complementary video of your flight that you record yourself with a handheld selfie stick and a mini adventure camera. Of course one of the main draws of the experience here is the high up views over Mount Fuji while in the sky, but do keep in mind that due to the variable weather conditions in the area this might not always be possible. But even without Mount Fuji on the horizon the scenery is amazing and unforgettable. For the best chances of seeing Mount Fuji during your flight, flying during winter months is recommended here.

And because all that adrenaline rush can work up an appetite, the staff at the Asagiri Kogen Paragliding School will be waiting for you back on the ground with a warm plate of homemade curry or something equally wholesome. You’ll share your lunch and possibly a chat with other paragliders about the flight, which all adds to a complete and authentic Mount Fuji experience.
