Koan Camping Ground sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Motosuko, one of the least developed lakes of the Fuji Five Lakes yet considered the most beautiful to some. This is another one of the reservation-free sites around Mount Fuji and campers can show up on the day and pick a spot on the beach.

Camping here is all about enjoying the waters of Lake Motosuko with Mount Fuji at the other side of the lake. The picturesque view of Mount Fuji from the beach is not just another view of the iconic volcano, it is the same scene that appears on the back of the 1,000 yen bill and catching this moment live feels pretty special. To appreciate the water, there is a long list of activities at Koan as well as access to canoes, stand up paddleboards, kayaks, and even get the chance to try out lake diving. As with camping, no reservations are needed for the water activities but you’ll need to contact the staff at the Motosu Central Lodge at the entrance in order to rent out the equipment. Keep in mind that this is a small campsite and one of the busiest at the Fuji Five Lakes, so you’ll need to line up on the side of the road bright and early to get a spot.

Tanukiko Camping Ground is at the top of the list of the most relaxing campsites in the Mount Fuji region and rightly so. Pitching your tent at the reservation-free southern site means you’ll find yourself nestled between mountains and sleeping on the shores of Lake Tanukiko with a front row seat to a spectacular view of Mount Fuji. While at Tanukiko, besides lounging around by your tent, you can rent a rowing boat and fishing gear to try your luck at catching your own dinner. You can also rent a bicycle to explore the trail circumventing the lake. And, to top the day off, make the short walk over to the Fuji View Lakeside Hotel & Spa and enjoy their hot spring bath overlooking the lake with Mount Fuji in the distance. Tanukiko Camping Ground is open all year and, although the facilities are simple, the site is equipped with a couple of cooking shelters and a cafeteria/shop to add a little convenience. Setting your tent here only costs 2,500 yen per night plus a 200 yen charge per person.

Shojiko Camping Cottage

The Shojiko Camping Cottage sit not far from the banks of their namesake, Lake Shoji, smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes. The lake is perhaps slightly underappreciated these days, but it also has less of the tourist infrastructure that can make the Mount Fuji base area into a bit of a circus; arguably, the best views of Mount Fuji can be found around the shores of Shoji; and this is the perfect spot to use as a base camp for exploring the Lake Shoji area. There is a site on the grounds to pitch a tent, but most elect for the cottages and bungalows. A recently introduced and highly exclusive (limited to one guest or couple per day) “Glamping SIte” is the best of both worlds: a luxuriously appointed tent with all the creature comforts, open to the wilderness, and with great views of the lake.

Gnome is a quaint camping ground on the shores of Lake Saiko run by Tokichi Kimura, an ex-model and renowned outdoorsman. At his camping village Kimura-san offers three different camping areas: the R Zone where prior reservation is required and tents are set up under the trees of a small forest; the F Zone, which is one of the two reservation-free areas within the camping village where tents are also pitched inside the forest but closer to the side of the main road; and finally the A Zone, which is also reservation-free but unlike R and F, here you’ll be camping right by the lake and also enjoying the view of Mount Fuji on clear days. At Gnome you can rent canoes, SUPs, and kayaks to paddle around Lake Saiko, or you can join Kimura-san on one of his guided tours. There are no showers on site, but Izumi Hot Spring is only 200 metres away and is open to campers during the day for a small fee.

Saiko Jiyu Camping Ground

Saiko Jiyu in the high season is busy, busy, busy, but most turn in early, meaning it’s still fairly peaceful come nightfall. Pitch a tent beside Lake Sai, light up the barbecue, and enjoy a few canned cocktails as the moon roses over the mountains. Saiko Juyi is in the perfect location if you’re looking to get into the forests around the lake, head out on a hike, visit Lake Sai Bat Cave or stop by Iyashi no Sato, the nearby open-air museum-cum-ghost town.

Saiko Tsuhara Camp site

At this spot on Lake Sai, the views are supreme. There are bungalows for rent and two large cottages further up the shore, but Tsuhara is perfect for tenting, with spots right down by the lake. In the early morning, with mist rolling up the lake into the thickly-forested hills, it feels like there is no place more peaceful. Stroll the nearby countryside or jump onto one of the trails (there is a lesser known entrance to the Ashida Mountain Trail not far from Tsuhara, a strenuous route up into the mountains behind the campground).

PICA Fuji Saiko Lake

This campground is right in the thick of things, between the amusement park at Fuji Subaruland and the tourist hub of Oshino Hakkai. PICA’s campground might not have the most stunning views, but it’s all relative, since Yamanashi is one of the prettiest spots in the country. This is a good option for those driving out from the city and planning to overnight before getting back on the road to explore. There are spaces for tent campers and RVs but most elect to spend the night in the cabins on the grounds. There are showers and a tuck shop, as well, so no need to worry about roughing it, while also getting a lungful of mountain air.

Private Cottage CAMP33 Yamanaka Lake

Camp 33 beside Lake Yamanaka is ideal for those driving up from Tokyo and looking to crash for a night or two with minimal headaches. The private cottage is set up with everything the guest needs, from bedding to barbecue; there's WiFi and a sound system, and seating out on the terrace; this is a hotel-type experience with great access to the great outdoors of Yamanashi. Rates during the high season are nigh usurious but that’s not the right time to visit, anyways! Slide in during the regular season (June to September) or, better yet, during the off season from November to March when rates are even lower and the mountains are just as pretty.
