Hatchi Hostel

With Kanazawa’s recent rise in popularity comes the birth of a new breed of accommodation: the trendy guest house. Wannabes aplenty, we found a perfectly located hostel that has hit the nail on the head from its minimalist, wooden interior and super stylish adjoined restaurant to its improbably low price tag.

  • While it’s possible to miss HATCHi on a Google search of where to stay in Kanazawa, it’s a lot harder to resist the trendy exterior and inviting atmosphere for those who happen upon the hostel. Conveniently located next to the Asano river, just a few minutes walk from the popular Higashi Chaya tea house district, passersby are drawn to Hatchi like moths to a flame, mainly thanks to its spacious front that looks onto the open space cafe and restaurant it houses on the ground floor.

Opening its doors to the public in March 2016, HATCHi is the first branch opened by the pioneering Share Hotels group, who aim to promote the concept of making your stay in a new place a shared and local experience. The main shared space in HATCHi is found on the basement floor where you are greeted by an immaculate kitchen space finished off with a long wooden work surface and a number of kitchen amenities. Whether using the space to save some of those precious yen on food or to socialise with the other guests, the comfortable space creates the relaxed vibes to do both.

Dinner at the in-house restaurant, a.k.a., is a more upmarket affair with delicious local Hokuriku dinner courses starting at around ¥3,000. Although the restaurant and cafe are run by different management, they have formed the perfect marriage with the hostel with a seamless continuation of the wooden theme and jovial spirit. Don’t miss the happy hour from 5pm to 7pm for a 500 yen glass of beer, wine or sake and o-banzai.

While hostels are often notorious for attracting a young and raucous crowd, HATCHi offers a variety of rooms to suit everyone from young women traveling alone to couples and families. HATCHi shared rooms are no ordinary, chaotic dormitory rooms but an unfussy fusion of classy dorm and capsule hotel with each bed curtained off to hide a comfortable space housing a bed, locker, and lamp. An unexpectedly good night’s sleep, the dark rooms and aroma of essential oils aid the peaceful, homely atmosphere along with your own pair of slippers to wear around the hostel.

The top floor of the building is home to the hostel’s luxurious Japanese room which offers ample peace and quiet as well as easy access onto the hostel’s roof terrace. Depending on the time of the week and the season, a bed in a dormitory will set you back as little as 2,500 yen while the private rooms are a bit more pricey.

While most of us are probably not particularly eager to recall memories of shared hostel bathrooms, HATCHi has outdone even most luxury hotels with its stylish grey-finished walls, modern lighting and luxuriously wide shower heads that rain on you from the ceiling. There’s also no need to worry about hostel hair thanks to the good quality hair dryers provided in the bathroom as well as free-to-use shampoo, conditioner and shower gel.

While HATCHi is still a baby in the world of Japanese guest houses, it is making its first steps towards success and is planning on opening up further branches around the country including Tokyo, Kyoto and Hokkaido.
