The Bunaco Experience in Aomori

Back in 1956, Bunaco was founded with the premise of making good use of the abundant amount of beech trees in Aomori Prefecture. The company not only put the beech wood to good use, it created (and continues to do so) stunning products using a unique and eco-friendly technique.

Over the years, Bunaco's simple yet elegant designs have gained international recognition thanks in part to numerous awards, and as such they have become a symbol of Aomori. Fortunately for those visiting Aomori, Bunaco's famous designs are not only available for purchase, but at the company's factory in Nishimeya Village, visitors can get a step-by-step look at the production process and can try recreating some of the designs as a part of the Bunaco production experience. This experience is worthwhile on its own or as part of a trip to the Shirakami Sanchi located only 30 minutes down the road.

The factory where the tour and workshops take place was a former elementary school, and during the experience participant will be walking in and out of various rooms where craftsmen handmade the lamps, dishes, and tissue boxes (among others); cutting the beech sheets, shaping them, sanding them, and polishing them, all in a continuous meticulous process. Seeing the process from start to finish is amazing experience and is inspiration to then put your own skills to the test in the workshop. As part of the factory tour, visitors can test out one of Bunaco’s signature products, the Faggio loudspeaker, which is also handmade and stunning.

The best way to end the workshop experience in Nishimeya, is by walking over to the Bunaco Cafe and trying the coffee and baumkuchen set while admiring the Bunaco pieces on display. In keeping with the whole theme, the baumkuchen served is inspired by Bunaco designs. From here, why not move on to the Shirakami Sanchi Visitor Centre and learn about the beech trees that make these beautiful pieces possible.

At the showroom, which is open daily from 10:30am to 7pm, customers can get a look at Bunaco’s most unique products as well as those that have won the Good Design Award during the company’s history. Better yet, why not combine a showroom visit with the production experience and make it a full Bunaco trip.
