Sukayu Onsen in the Hakkoda Mountains

If old and iconic is what you are looking for when in search of onsen, then Sukayu Onsen has that and more. The actual hot spring, found in the Hakkoda Mountains was opened more than 300 years ago and has been a local favourite since the 1950s. Sukayu Onsen is a large building hugged by the mountains and wilderness where guests can choose from various types of rooms based on short and long term stays. The main reason to make the trip here is the famous “Sennin Buro” or “Thousands People Bath”, so called because of its large size. This iconic bath has been gender-free from its beginnings and people of all ages come and share the acidic cloudy waters of this beech wood bath. Although the Sennin Buro is open to both genders, there is an hour allotted as “women only” everyday.

    Maruhon Onsen

    Maruhon Onsen

Maruhon Ryokan is a cozy and quaint accommodation option located in the Shimokita District and hidden in the hills of Shimofuro, an onsen town on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Opened to the public in 1887, it has seen many a fisherman stop by to used the lowered floor bath and feast on the healthy home-cooked meals. Some of the rooms overlook the harbour and waking up with sunlight beaming through the window and a warm cup of tea is a great way to start the day.
