Nestled between the old private houses and the Higashiyama Temple route is one of the more popular ryokans in Takayama, Oyado Yamakyu. Featuring twenty traditional Japanese-style rooms with peaceful views of the neighbouring Higashiyama area. Each room is equipped with complimentary yukata, wifi access and traditional tatami flooring.

There are two dining rooms, where full home-cooked traditional dishes are served on low tables on tatami. Using only local produce, the Yamakyu offers dishes like the famed Hida Beef and Hoba Miso as well as freshly made tempura accompanied by tart oka pickles. They can also accommodate dietary requests when made in advance.

Yamakyu wraps around a central courtyard that has a traditional Japanese garden complete with cobbled paths and a red wooden bridge. The lobby and lounging areas are decorated with artefacts, paintings, and ceramic displays, like an eclectic museum of history. Along the red carpet corridors are a collection of antiques such as a giant longcase clock. They even have photographs of all the famous Japanese guests that have come to stay over the years.

At Yamakyu they have gender separate onsen baths, indoor waterwheel baths, and outdoor springs that are open daily until 23:00. Perfect to warm up from the colder climate of northern Gifu and relax as you soak in healing water after a long day of sightseeing.

It’s also possible to venture out and try other onsen in the Takayama area if you have time during your stay at Yamakyu. If you missed out on the onsens in the nearby village of Okuhida Onsengo, there are hot springs at a small few hotels in Takayama. At the Hida Hotel Plaza, the Hiten-no-yu is a natural hot spring on the 9th floor of this recently renovated hotel. The Kamishiro no Yu at the in over luxurious Hidatei Hanaougi hotel is well-known in the town, set in a building built over 1000 years ago from Japanese cedar wood.

Yamakyu offers complimentary shuttle buses between Takayama station and the ryokan has guest parking free of charge. If you are looking for something more central, the delightful Ryokan Tanabe is a stone’s throw from the Miyagawa river and offers a more traditional experience - the inn even offers tea served over a irori (Japanese hearth). The Ryokan Iroha is just a 3 minute walk from the JR Takayama station and offers a cypress bath, kaiseki room service and gorgeous gardens. If you are looking for something a little more unusual, there is a Japanese inn close to Hida no sato that is a Gassho-zukuri style home complete with thatch roofing and a irori. Another more unique spot is the Hida Takayama Tenhoji Youth Hostel right on the grounds of the Tenshoji Temple, right in the middle of Higashiyama Terramachi.
