Where to Stay in Kyoto

Kyoto offers several interesting accommodation opportunities. Everything from luxurious ryokans to simple guesthouses. Here are three of our favorites.

    Len

A boutique hostel located in the heart of Kyoto that opened in 2015. Their great lounge/bar space on the bottom floor and the fact that they have several different kinds of rooms that suit most budgets make Len one of our absolute favorite places to spend our nights in Kyoto. The rooms are tastefully decorated in a minimal yet fashionable style – it’s apparent that someone with a good sense of interior design was involved with this project right from the start.

Their dormitory beds (mixed or female only rooms available) start at 2600 yen per night, and twin rooms (with one bunk bed) costs 6800 yen per night (3400 yen per person). If you really want to splurge, they also have a double room with queen or king-sized beds that will set you back 8800 and 10800 yen per night respectively. Granted, the rooms are all pretty small by
international standards, but the beds are comfortable and after all, that’s what matters the most,
    isn’t it?

The bar area is open to anyone, and we think it’s worth stopping by even if you’re not a guest here, the coffee is great and most of the guests as well as the staff are very friendly and talkative.

    9hours

The interior of this capsule hotel looks like it could have been taken straight out of a sci-fi movie. Here you’ll spend the night in simple but fairly spacious capsules made out of shiny white plastic, equipped with most modern necessities such as power outlets and free wifi. The shower rooms are shared, just like at most other capsule hotels. But they are clean and the shower floor seemed to be able to cope with the steady stream of visitors, even during the morning rush just before check-out time.

A one night stay costs 4900 yen. If you just want to check out the place you can also opt for their “nap” package which will set you back 1000 yen for the first hour and 300 yen for each hour after (with shower use included). The nap package is available between noon and 9pm. The company also runs capsule hotels in the same style and under the same brand in Tokyo, Sendai and Narita.

    Piece Hostel

Another small chain running well designed hostels is Piece Hostel. Currently, they have two buildings, one next to Kyoto station, and the other in the somewhat more conveniently located Shijo-Kawaramachi area.

Just like Len, Piece Hostel also offer simple yet stylish rooms, for affordable prices. Dorms start at 2800 yen per night, and private double rooms (with a shared bathroom) start at 4500 yen.

We like their lounge area too, thanks to the good selection of travel magazines and books they provide as inspiration for their guests.
