Where to Stay in Himeji

Himeji is a fairly small town by Japanese standards, and the accommodation options are limited in scope. Here are three different options, for three different budgets, that all come highly recommended.

  • For the budget minded traveler, a guesthouse will be the best bet. Sure, you will give up some privacy by not having your own room, but in return you will save quite a bit of money that can be better spent on other things.

Himeji Guest House Engakudou is a guesthouse in a traditional Japanese wooden house located a few minutes’ walk from Himeji castle. The dormitory is simple but clean, and provides all the basic necessities. On the ground floor there’s a lounge space with a huge collection of manga that that guests are welcome to enjoy. Dormitory beds start at 2,500 yen per night, with private rooms also available, albeit at a slightly higher price. They have a good English language website that makes booking a breeze. http://www.engakudou.com/english.html

If you want to step up a notch then one of the many business hotels around Himeji Station would be a safe bet. One that we can safely vouch for is Grandvrio Hotel Himeji Castle. The rooms are the standard Japanese business hotel style. However, guests also get free access to bath and spa facilities, which are very comfortable, clean and built to unusually high standards. Unfortunately, they ban guests with tattoos from the spa and bath area. Double rooms are available for 9,800-16,000 yen per night. http://www.himejicastlehotel.co.jp/

If you really want to splurge, and stay at an extraordinary place, Yuyake Koyake is hard to beat. All rooms at this award winning high-end ryokan have their own open-air baths. The interior design is top notch, and some of the rooms come with hammocks and splendid views of the nearby garden too. It is located quite far from central Himeji though, so it is not the best option if you plan to do a lot of travelling back and forth between the city and your accommodation. Nevertheless, the rooms here are so nice you might actually pass up going to see the rest of the town. Rooms around 30,000 yen per night. https://www.yuyake-koyake.com
