    Play in the street

    “Pedestrian’s Paradise”

    “Pedestrian’s Paradise”

Every weekend from noon until 5pm (6pm during the warmer months) Ginza’s main street is closed to traffic and becomes “Pedestrian’s Paradise”, as Chuo-dori becomes a wide space for walking, relaxing, and people-watching.

This is especially good for families, as kids can more or less run around freely in the middle of downtown without having to be hustled along crowded sidewalks. They even have chairs and tables with umbrellas set up in the middle, so if you can manage to get a seat, you’ll have the perfect perch for watching the crowds go by.

    Experience Kabuki

    Kabuki-za

    Kabuki-za

Once seen as somewhat low-brow entertainment for the masses, kabuki was constantly under attack by the shogunate for its controversial, erotic, and bawdy performances.

With the passage of time, the dance-drama style has become part of Japanese tradition, and enjoys a much higher status among the arts than in the past. There aren’t many kabuki theaters anymore, but at the legendary Kabuki-za in Ginza you can catch a performance of kabuki, and even get English guidance in the form of captions so you know what’s going on.

While many people attend in formal attire, there's a wide variety of people in the theater. You can even get discounted tickets to watch just one act if you don’t want to watch the entire performance. These discounted tickets are only available at the Kabuki-za and are same day tickets. If you're in the area, you have the choice to pop-in.

Yubari Melon ice cream (Cantaloupe ice cream)

The long-established building located in front of Yurakucho Station, Tokyo Kotsu Kaikan is a spot that you may initially overlook but it's a must-see for gourmet lovers.

On B1F you will find many popular shops (that often have waiting lines) scattered in a restaurant area. There are also a number of antenna shops that represent regions from across the country. Hokkaido’s shop is very popular for their Yubari Melon ice cream and there is always a waiting line to get this sweet treat.

There are 14 other antenna shops such as Osaka, Hakata, and Oita. Taste some delicious Takoyaki at the Osaka shop or get a free footbath at the Oita shop. The great thing about Kotsu Kaikan is you can get goods from all over Japan that you otherwise would only be able get if you got it directly.

    Art Galleries

    Art Galleries

    Art Galleries

Just walking through the side streets of Ginza you’ll find plenty of art galleries (over 200 in fact), but if you don’t know what you’re looking for, you might walk right past them.

These spaces can be found on various floors of buildings, rarely front and center on the sidewalk, so if you’re looking for a gallery experience (especially for Japanese art) it’s best to do a little homework before heading out. Gallery Tsubaki is well-worth the visit, and you can even check out the Shiseido Gallery which is right on the main street.

The izakayas offer welcoming and lively atmospheres enhanced by the tight quarters and rumbling of the overhead trains. Food and drinks are usually cheap, plus you’ll likely make a few new friends.

    Tori Paitan Soba

Ginza is also a neighborhood where you can find excellent ramen. There are tantalizing vegan options and even shops that have popped up in the Michelin Guide. Kagari has been selected to be in the Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide, a special honor awarded to restaurants that are both cheap and delicious.

Kagari has only 8 counter seats in a warm wooden interior, making for an intimate dining experience, and the Toripaitan Soba is what put them on the map. Offering a creamy chicken-based soup with slices of chicken chashu, the Toripaitan Soba is a sophisticated take on ramen sure to impress.

Ginza is a kind of melting pot for specialties from all across Japan. The so-called “antenna shops” are import stores that sell goods local to other prefectures, so you can have a taste of Hokkaido or Aomori without leaving central Tokyo.

If there’s somewhere in Japan that time constraints didn’t allow you to make it to this time around, then chances are Ginza has a shop with all the goodies you were hoping to find.

    Ginza Lion Beer Hall

    Ginza Lion Beer Hall

    Ginza Lion Beer Hall

    Ginza Lion Beer Hall

    Ginza Lion Beer Hall

Originally built in 1934, Ginza Lion is the oldest beer hall in all of Japan.

Although some renovations have been made to the building, the first floor has retained almost the same appearance as when it was first built which takes you back in time to the 1930’s.

With its wood panelling, high ceilings, and wall paintings, Ginza Lion looks much like a Bavarian beer hall. They serve up Sapporo beer poured by a beer master to make sure you get the best glass of beer every time. Along with your beer, you can choose from an assortment of German-inspired snacks.

Ginza Lion is a 1 minute walk from Ginza Station.
