As tea cultivation plays an important role in the identity of Uji, most of the culinary experiences on offer here also have a connection to green leaves.

Matcha Ice Cream
Green tea flavoured ice cream is common all over Japan, but we do recommend that you try it hear in Uji, where some of the shops actually produce the flavoring themselves from freshly ground tea-leaves. A good place for this is Ito Kyuemon Uji Honten, located a few minutes on foot from Uji station (Keihan).

Green Tea Soba
Another famous product worth trying while in Uji is the green tea flavored soba noodles. Shops that serve this particular dish are located all over town. A good place to start is along Byodo-in Omotesando. Here, you will find several shops where you can watch the noodles being made and cut by hand before they are cooked and served to the customers. The lunch set at Ujigawa Ryokan, located at the beginning of Byodoin Omotesando, will set you back around 1500 yen and comes highly recommended.

Fucha Ryori
If you want to experience a somewhat different dining experience, we highly recommend you head over the the Zen Buddhist Temple Manpukuji and try Fucha Ryori, a variant of traditional buddhist cuisine. Fucha Ryori consist of several smaller dishes, all of which are vegan. A bento box to consume at their premises will set you back 3,000 yen and a course meal will cost between 5,000 and 7,000 yen.

Locally produced foods
Aside from tea, the Uji region also produces many other kinds of foods and you will find plenty of restaurants making a big point out of the fact that they only use locally sourced ingredients. Country road is a ”farmers café”, specializing in locally produced meat, chicken and vegetables. It is located near some of the more impressive tea plantations in the southern Uji region.

Gyokuro
Gyokuro is one of the highest quality teas produced in Japan, and it has a significantly different flavour than most other green teas. It is also prepared in a different manner, using water at a fairly low temperature. One interesting aspect of Gyokuro is that you can actually eat the leaves after the tea is infused. The flavour is mild and somewhat reminiscent of spinach. Gyokuro is often eaten with soy sauce and a bit of lemon.
