Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり), Miyagi
Originating from the Chinese Qixi Festival, the Sendai Tanabata Festival celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi on the 7th day of the 7th month.
It was first introduced to Japan in the 8th century, with the festival in Sendai becoming one of the most famous tanabata. Thousands of colorful streamers and paper decorations hanging from long bamboo poles decorate the city, with live music, traditional dance performances and a fireworks display among the highlights.
