One of Tohoku’s largest parades, the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival features a lavishly decorated float of Zao Gongen leading a procession of nearly 10,000 dancers in brightly colored costumes. It takes place in the main street of Yamagata City, accompanied by taiko drummers and hypnotic umbrella spinning.
A variety of different dances are performed throughout the parade, with spectators invited to join in and dance along.
