Otagi Nenbutsuji 愛宕念仏寺 on the outskirts of Arashiyama might be considered an out of the way spot.
But their collection of nearly 1,200 unique and expressive Buddhist statues called Rakan (Buddha's followers) can only be seen here.
You will find all sorts of adorable Rakan, including ones that are engaging in sports such as tennis or boxing, as well as ones cuddling up with a child or a cat.
