One of Kamakura’s most charming temples is Houkokuji, which nestles in the hills to the east of the city center. It was founded during the early Muromachi Period (1336 - 1573) and is part of the Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism.

A highlight of the temple is its beautiful bamboo garden (which has earned it the nickname of “Bamboo Temple”) and features a network of narrow paths where you can soak up the tranquility. Amidst the lush foliage is a peaceful teahouse where you can enjoy a cup of matcha tea and take in the spiritual energy of Hokokuji.
