VEGAN STORE: A Newly opened Specialty Convenience store in Asakusa

While the number of vegan stores in Japan is gradually increasing, they are still quite rare, which is why the opening of a vegan specialty store in Asakusa last December is causing quite a stir.
It offers a unique range of plant-based goods and ready-to-eat meals, making it an ideal stop for those seeking vegan-friendly produce while in Tokyo.

VEGAN STORE sells mostly vegan products that have been certified by the Japanese NPO “Vege Project”.
It was created in 2013 by Haruko Kawano, a Kyoto University student who wanted to make the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle easier in Japan.
One example is the Nutty Bavarian’s mixed caramel nuts, which have been certified by “Vege Project” and are for sale at the Vegan Store.

Rather than being roasted, the beans are ground at a low speed and low temperature to ensure their naturally occurring antioxidants and enzymes survive.

One of the Vegan Store’s most popular products is their soft-serve ice cream, which is created in-store using homemade nut milk combined with crushed dates.
No additives or animal-based milk products are used in the ice cream, which has a light brown appearance and a mild flavor.

If you’re a sweet tooth, we recommend adding hibiscus syrup as a topping, as the ice cream isn’t overly sweet.
You can also opt to add mixed nuts and cacao nibs on top of your ice cream for 50 yen each.
