Tokyo Metro Ginza Line train will stop during the New Year!

For those thinking of travelling to Tokyo during the New Year, now is the time to pay attention. Shibuya Station for the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line is going to be relocated. During that time, you will need to travel along an alrenate route, or perhaps use a different means of transport.

    Ginza line - stop date

    The construction of the platform will be conducted from the 28th of December 2019 until the 2nd of January 2020 (Six days in total).

    If the construction is delayed from some unforseeable reason, the construction date will begin from the 29th of December 2019 and end on the 3rd of January 2020.

    Ginza Line - Stop zones & Turn around sections

    The stop zones are between: "Shibuya - Omotesando" and "Aoyama Ichome - Tameike Sanno".

    The turn around sections are: "Omotesando - Aoyama-Ichome" and "Tameike Sanno - Asakusa" (as shown in the figure below).

    Ginza line - train times

    For trains running from "Tameike Sanno - Asakusa", a train will come every 3 minutes during rush hour. Outside of rush hour, train times will vary, taking from 3 to up to 15 minutes.

    For trains running from "Omotesando - Aoyama-Ichome", a train will come around every 12 minutes during rush hour. Outside of rush hour, this becomes 16 to 22 minutes.

    That's why, if you want to travel from Aoyama-Ichome to Shibuya, it's better to take the Hanzomon Line instead to save time.

    The new platform will be opening on the 3rd of January 2020

    On January 3, 2020, the new Shibuya Station Ginza Line platforms will come into use. The new platforms feature an m-shaped arched roof, the platform width has been increased from six to twelve meters, and there are accessibility features such as a multifunctional toilet. From December 28, 2019, the current platform will no longer be used.

    Please take note if you are planning on going to Shibuya via the Ginza Line during this period.
