The Restaurants and Bars of Toranomon

In the mid-2010s, Toranomon was transformed from a business-oriented Japanese political and economic hub, into one of the freshest areas to go out in Tokyo.

With the National Diet Building to the north, Shinbashi to the east, Tokyo Tower to the south, and Roppongi/Akasaka to the west, Toranomon was known as a relatively quiet district; a thoroughfare for business people and government officials to travel through; from work to entertainment and dining.

But with the construction of Toranomon Hills and the widening of Toranomon’s Shintora-dori Ave. into Tokyo’s own version of the Champs-Élysées, it has now become an entertaining nightlife district in its own right.

    Toranomon Hills

Toranomon Hills is a great place to start your night wandering around the area. The building is watched over by the 10 meter high sculpture, “Roots”, by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa.

Constructed from characters which make up languages from around the world, it signifies a global culture and is an apt addition to the grounds of the building. Upon entering the building, the ground floor looks as if it is an office building exclusively, but head up the escalators to check out the shops, bars, and restaurants.

The best place to view the sculpture is with a beer from Toranomon Hop, a casual beer house on the third floor of Toranomon Hills.

Toranomon Hop serves more than eight different craft beers. If you prefer bottled beer, they sell more than twenty types of bottled beer imported from around the world. This includes the German Weizenbock style beer "Weihenstephaner Vitus", of which Toranomon Hop is an exclusive importer. They also serve local German delicacies such as German potatoes, Esbein and platters of Northern Bavarian sausages.

    Shintora-dori Avenue

Shintori-dori is the widened avenue that joins Toranomon Hills to Shinbashi and was opened to the public in 2014. Most of the buildings on the road are nearing their final stages of construction, making it one of Tokyo’s main roads connecting sporting locations across the city during the Olympics.

Before the olympics begins, the locals need to know more about the area, so the local businesses and government are working on ways to attract visitors. One of which is Shintora-dori Core.

    Shintora-dori Core

Shintora-dori Core which opened in September 2018, is one of the landmark projects in the area. It combines a 15-floor building of offices, cafes and other various shops with publicly accessible space for people to gather and relax.

The Core Kitchen/Space on the ground floor of the building is an expression of this. With an open restaurant/cafe/kitchen space, in conjunction with an event space that can be used for seminars and workshops.

The back wall is covered with a huge mural titled “PERFECT/Imperfection” which from far away looks almost computer-generated, yet when you stand close to it you can see the hand drawn elements which went into its creation.

    Yona Yona Beer Works

On the second floor of Shintora-dori Core is Yona Yona Beer Works. American Pale Ale, a light and fruity IPA, is the most celebrated craft beer of the local Karuizawa-based Yo-Ho Brewing Company.

Recently Yona Yona Beer Works bar/restaurants have been popping up all over Tokyo. Famous for being one of Japan’s only craft beers to also be available in convenience stores (if you’re looking for it, try Lawson Station), try it on tap with a selection of snacks or a meal at Yona Yona Beer Works. Indo no Aooni is a heavier IPA which also comes highly recommended.

    Tabisuru Market

If you find yourself exploring Shintora-dori, you will come across Tabisuru Market. Surrounded by pop-up stores, you can find everything you need from standing bars, cafes and restaurants.

Each one specializes in products or delicacies from a single region in Japan. Tabisuru in Japanese means to travel, so the Tabisuru Market is designed to bring elements of domestic Japanese travel, such as tastes, specialities, and personalities from different regions and areas, to the center of Tokyo.

Another worthy shout-out in the area is to Vector Beer Toranomon, a Tokyo-based craft brewery. The Toranomon location specializes in rotisserie chicken which are marinated for two days, and offers ten different beers on tap, all brewed at their brewery in Shinjuku.
