Nishijin Akariya is located in a back alley of Nishijin, a district that’s well known for its traditional textile production.
The cozy store is run by a lovely couple who rent out not only kimono and obi (waist belts) but also geta (wooden sandals), hair ornaments and bags as part of their sets.
You can also have your hair set for free as part of the rental package.

Choose a Kimono

The first step is to choose your favorite kimono from the various floral and retro patterns that are available.
There are also plenty of yukata (casual version of a kimono), that you can browse through with options for both women and men.
After choosing a kimono, you will also need to select an appropriate obi from the wide selection.

Hair Ornaments and Getas

Once you have your kimono and obi, it’s now time to choose your accessories. Choose freely, since it doesn’t cost you an extra cent.
Nishijin Akariya is renowned for its abundant selection of hair ornaments, so have fun trying on different ones so that your kimono, geta and bag all match up.
No need to store your valuables, since the bags are large enough to store your personal belonging (purse, mobile phone, keys, small camera).

After selecting your kimono and accessories, the staff will help you to get dressed.
This is a very speedy & neat process, executed with skill.
In as little as 10 minutes, you’ll be dressed and ready to hit the streets of Kyoto in your traditional attire.

Free Hair Styling

If you’d like to have your hair styled traditionally, Nishijin Akariya also offers this service for free.
It’s incredibly fast, taking as little as five minutes for their staff to set your hair in a classic Japanese style.

Explore Kyoto Wearing a Kimono

Once your dressing session is complete, it’s time to enjoy the sights of Kyoto in your traditional Japanese attire.
Walking in geta and a kimono might take some getting used to, but this will give you time to capture some incredible photographs in this historic city.

Return your Kimono

Nishijin Akariya’s reception is open until 6:00 pm, but you can return your kimono and accessories until 8:00 pm.
Just keep in mind that’s it’s not possible to return your items between 5:00 and 7:00 pm, so schedule your return time accordingly.

How to Make a Reservation

You can reserve a kimono dressing session with Nishijin Akariya via the LINE app or using the contact form on their website.
LINE and Online bookings are available 24 hours a day.

Make sure you get check for the reservation confirmation email which comes from the store. Your reservation hasn't been finalized until you receive that confirmational email. You willl typically receive the email within the same business day.

Nishijin Akariya

If you’re traveling by train from Kyoto Station, you can ride the Karasuma subway line to Imadegawa and then walk to the store from there in around 10 minutes.

Nishijin Akariya can be accessed by bus number 9 from Kyoto Station to Horikawa Kamidachiuri which takes roughly 25 minutes.
If you’re in Shijo Karasuma, get the number 12 bus that departs to Horikawa Kamidachiuri. This bus will take around 20 minutes.
