Also known as “hurricane lilies” or “spider lilies”, cluster amaryllis are native Japanese plants that are renowned for their bright red floral displays in autumn.
There are more than 30 varieties in total, with not only red but also white, yellow and orange cluster amaryllis can be seen. In this article, we’ll introduce some of the most impressive places to see them across the Kanto region and the best times to visit.

Kinchakuda Manjushage Park, Saitama
Hidaka’s Kinchakuda Manjushage Park is one of the most popular destinations for viewing cluster amaryllis, with around five million in bloom each autumn along the banks of the Koma River. Mid-September to early October is the best time to visit, with the Manjushage Festival also held during this time.

Gongendo Park, Saitama
Another Saitama destination not to miss for cluster amaryllis lovers is Gongendo Park in Satte City where around 3.5 million crimson flowers bloom between mid-September and early October each year. The park’s slopes are blanketed in a carpet of red, with a few rare white cluster amaryllis blooms also visible.

Terasaka Tanada, Saitama
Terasaka Tanada is said to be the largest rice terrace in Saitama Prefecture and is covered in cluster amaryllis from mid-to-late September. This stunning display of red is celebrated during the Terasaka Tanada Cluster Amaryllis Festival, which will be held on September 22, 2019 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

If you’re visiting Tokyo, then head to the Koishikawa Korakuen garden in Bunkyo-ku where you can see cluster amaryllis backed by the Tokyo Dome.

Hama-rikyu Gardens, Tokyo
Hama-rikyu is a Daimyo garden in Chuo-ku that will transport you back to the Edo period. Around mid-September, the garden transforms a brilliant red as cluster amaryllis begin to bloom, particularly around the site of the Enryokan.

Saihoji Temple, Kanagawa
If you’re visiting Kanagawa, the Saihoji Temple in Yokohama’s Kohoku Ward is the place to head to see cluster amaryllis in a variety of colors, including red, white, yellow and pink. About 11,000 bloom in total from mid-to-late September, particularly along the staircase that leads to the mountain gate.

Eishoji Temple, Kanagawa
Another popular amaryllis cluster spot in Kamakura is the Eishoji Temple, with the flowers blooming slightly later here (late September to early October) compared to most of the other places. But it’s important to keep in mind that the displays are dependent on the weather and can change from year to year.

Hayakawabuchi Higanbana no Sato, Gunma
Around 30 minutes on foot from Sakaimachi Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line will take you to Gunma Prefecture’s most spectacular display of cluster amaryllis - Hayakawabuchi Higanbana no Sato.
Around three million flowers transform the area into a sea of red, with the displays at their most impressive between mid-to-late September. This private property is run by volunteers and located in Sakaimitsugi to the east of Isesaki’s city center.
