18 of the Best Things to Do in Nakameguro

Home to eclectic cafes, designer boutiques and shops with a refined taste, Nakameguro has established a reputation as one of Tokyo’s trendiest districts. People who are interested in vintage fashion, interior design and delicious food will all find inspiration here, as well as a sento (public bath) for some relaxing “time out”.

Nakameguro centers around the Meguro River, which is famous for its cherry blossoms, meaning the crowds are at their peak during late March and early April. But with plenty of shops that let you experience Japanese art and aesthetics, there are so many reasons to visit Nakameguro at any time of the year.

The Meguro River is one of Tokyo’s most famous cherry blossom viewing destinations, particularly along the four -kilometer-long stretch through fashionable Nakameguro. It’s a picturesque spot to wander even outside of the sakura season, with lots of stylish shops and cafes lining the river banks.

If you visit after dark during the hanami season, the cherry blossoms are beautifully illuminated, with live music to accompany people as they picnic beneath the trees. It’s a completely relaxed and uniquely Japanese atmosphere that shouldn’t be missed.

Boasting a prime position on the Meguro River is the world’s fifth Starbucks Reserve Roastery, after openings in Seattle, Shanghai, Milan and New York. Its traditionally-inspired building was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, with a light-colored wood that gives the space an airy feel.

Aside from enjoying freshly roasted coffee with views of the surrounding sakura trees, this new local hotspot also has special sakura-flavored drinks that are available in-season. Combined with its innovative design, this is a reason to visit in itself, even if you don’t drink coffee.

    Iroha Sushi

    Iroha Sushi

    Iroha Sushi

Also located along the Meguro River, Iroha Sushi is known for its convenient location and affordable prices. The shop itself might look homely in comparison to Naka Meguro’s chic new eateries, but the sushi never disappoints. The fish is fresh, the lunch sets start from under 1,000 yen, and the restaurant is open until late, making it one of the only joints that serves sashimi as the sun rises.

There is also a variety of rolls for Japan newcomers wary of trying raw fish. The original sushi roll, a combination of salmon, crab, and avocado, is a beginner’s gateway to trying more adventurous sushi. At night, the restaurant turns into an izakaya, offering “all you can drink” alcohol deals. The shop is famous and can fill up quickly. Luckily, those without a reservation can check out the second location, also in Nakameguro.

With a World Pizza Cup-winning pizzaiolo at the helm, this trattoria gained a lot of attention when it opened recently in Nakameguro. It’s styled on a traditional Neapolitan backstreet restaurant, with a no-frills look and a lively atmosphere that sees patrons lining up outside the entrance.

There are around 30 different types of pizza on the menu, including favorites like Margherita and Quattro Formaggi (four cheese), which are made on a delicious sourdough crust. A highlight of eating here is watching the owner, Hisanori Yamamoto, expertly paddling pizzas in and out of his massive wood-fired oven.

    Mahakara Happy Pudding

    Mahakara Happy Pudding

Handmade using only the best eggs available, the Mahakara Happy Pudding shop is not to be missed for those with a sweet tooth. These custard puddings are incredibly rich in flavor due to the use of Nihon Ichi Kodawari Tomago (eggs that are particularly high in vitamin E), with a fresh, minty aroma and slightly bitter caramel aftertaste.

The name “Happy Pudding” came about after the owner noticed that everyone’s face appeared happy while eating the puddings, a natural reaction to the deliciousness experienced after just one mouthful.
