Yokohama has a long history as one of the first Japanese ports to be opened to outsiders. This role naturally made the city friendly to international visitors. Minatomirai, which literally means “port of the future”, is the cosmopolitan business district of Yokohama and was developed in the 1980s. A large park and Japan’s biggest Chinatown are also located near this district. Here are 16 things to do in Yokohama to enrich your visit!

The outside of the building is also an event space, with a flower garden, Octoberfest celebrations, an ice skating rink, and more regularly organized. 5. Enjoy the night views from Landmark Tower
The Yokohama Landmark Tower was the tallest building in Japan when it was completed in 1993. Now, it is the second tallest in Japan but it still has overwhelmingly beautiful views. The shiny lights of the city’s buildings and their reflections on the water are breathtaking. If you go there on a sunny day to watch the sunset, you can see the magnificent combination of Mt. Fuji and Yokohama’s city lights.

6. Grab drinks at Yokohama’s best bar area, Noge
While Minatomirai has a sophisticated atmosphere and is located on the north side of JR Sakuragi-cho Station, Noge is a casual and nostalgic drinking area on the south side. It’s renowned as an area where you can get cheap drinks and tasty food. Energetic izakayas are popular places for local businessmen to wash away the day’s stresses and there are quite a lot of stylish restaurants in this area too. There are also oden stands (a Japanese hot pot with dashi broth), yakitori bars (grilled chicken skewers), jazz cafes and many more places that you can enjoy at night!

11. Experience the factory night cruise
You might think that a cruise tour looking around factories isn’t for you. But it’s a very popular activity among travelers! Yokohama and Kawasaki are neighboring cities and they both have big industrial districts. The factory night cruise takes you to places where you can enjoy the beautiful factory night lights illuminated in the water. For those who can’t imagine what it might look like, picture the opening scene of the Harrison Ford movie “Blade Runner”. There was actually an event to celebrate the new Blade Runner movie in one of those industrial districts!

12. Spend a night listening to jazz in Kannai and Isezaki-cho
As Yokohama has been the gateway for international culture, jazz music was introduced to this area many years ago. There are many old, yet still active jazz bars there. If you check the bar websites, you might find that your favorite internationally-recognized players are performing in this area! Most of the bars are small, so you might even get a chance to talk to the players when they are taking a break.

13. Eat Yokohama Iekei ramen
Iekei ramen is one of the styles of ramen that originated in Yokohama. It’s based on a tonkotsu-shoyu (pork bone and soy sauce) soup and features thick noodles. This style of ramen originated in a shop called “Yoshimura-ya” and has been developed by other ramen shops both inside and outside of Yokohama. Yokohama Iekei ramen Kachidoki-ya is one of those shops that has developed its own taste under the influence of Yoshimura-ya. They have an amazing ramen for you to try!

14. Stroll through the Yamate area
Yamate is an elegant area on a hill where you can admire historical Western-style houses. This area used to be a residential area for Western merchants and diplomats, and it still has an affluent and peaceful ambience. Many of the houses here are open to the public, with interiors that have retained their original style. There is also a café inside a building that dates to 1927 where you can stop by for a cup of coffee during your walk.

16. Experience old-world Japan at the Ramen Museum
The Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is a fun place to visit and not just to eat ramen. The entire interior of the building has an interesting atmosphere that harks back to the old days of Japan! There is a nostalgic candy store (which used to be all over Japan) and there is a circuit where you can play slot-car races! The museum also has an exhibition space where you can learn about the history of ramen. And of course their ramen shops are wonderful. There are a bunch of ramen shops inside the museum, including stores offering gluten-free and vegan ramen. Why not order the mini-sized ramen bowls so you can try ramen from many different shops.
