Serving as the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture, Fukuoka is a bustling city of around 1.5 million people and the most populous city on Kyushu Island. It’s packed with ancient temples, fine museums and modern shopping malls, as well as being home to the 17th-century Fukuoka Castle.

But if you’re needing an escape from the city, there are plenty of places you can visit as a day trip for a more rejuvenating experience. In this article, we’ll introduce three destinations that are easily accessible from Fukuoka where you can hit the coast, smell the flowers and take a step back in time.

Enjoy the coastal lifestyle of Itoshima

Itoshima is a laid-back beach town that’s just 40 minutes by train along the Kuko Line from Hakata Station. It’s renowned for its chilled vibes and beautiful beaches, with plenty of activities centered around the water. Whether it’s hitting the surf or scenic driving along the untouched coastline, you’ll return to Fukuoka feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Don’t miss a visit to the Oyster Huts, which are open from the beginning of October until around March (although the most delicious oysters are usually available during January and February when the water’s at its coldest). It’s a fun place to barbecue oysters and other seafood (or just eat them fresh) and it’s okay to bring your own food and drinks as an accompaniment.

No matter how you spend your day in Itoshima, no visit is complete without watching the sunset from beautiful Palm Beach, which is backed by cafe terraces and bars where you can grab a sundowner.

It might only be 10 minutes by ferry from Fukuoka, but Nokonoshima Island feels a world away. It’s situated in the middle of Hakata Bay and is blanketed in beautiful flowers during the spring and autumn seasons.

There’s just one private ferry departing every hour for the island, with one-way fares costing 230 yen for adults and 120 yen for children. Once you arrive on the island, you can utilize the Nishitetsu bus service for getting around or rent a bicycle (or e-bike) to explore at your leisure.
