Haneda Airport : A Complete Guide to the International Terminal

Haneda Airport is a major point of entry and exit for visitors to Tokyo and is one of the busiest airports in Asia. To help you get around and enjoy your time at the airport, we’ve created this short guide to introduce some of Haneda International Terminal’s recommended shops and convenient services, as well as the best way of moving between the International and Domestic Terminals.

    Inside the International Terminal is a charming street that reproduces an authentic Edo period town, including wooden buildings and bright red pillars. It’s lined with shops selling traditional Japanese accessories and souvenirs, as well as cafes where you can find delicious matcha sweets. If you’re feeling hungry, stop in at the restaurant on Edo Koji where you can dine on sushi, ramen or yakiniku (grilled meats).

    Saryo ITOEN is a Japanese tea store that creates delicious matcha drinks and sweets, and is open 24 hours a day at the Haneda International Airport. They’re located on the fourth floor near the Edo Koji alley, with distinctive red umbrellas outside the entrance to the store. Be sure to try their matcha rice cake balls with azuki soft cream (650 yen).

    Setagaya is another 24-hour restaurant on the 4th floor of the International Terminal that’s renowned for its Setagaya Ramen (1,080 yen). Aside from its main branch in Komazawa, the restaurant also has a New York St Marks store and a New York Brooklyn store, making it popular with foreign travelers. There’s often a line outside but it moves fast and is well worth the wait for their fragrant soups.

    This confectionary store sells traditional Japanese and European sweets that make for an ideal last-minute souvenir. Aside from selling sweets that are currently popular, it also sells confectionary that was around during the Edo Period to appeal to those interested in Japan’s rich food culture. There are two branches on the 4th floor of the Haneda International Terminal.

This replica Edo-era bridge stretches 25 meters in length and offers a photogenic opportunity for those wanting a taste of 19th-century Japan. Its adjacent wall is decorated with folding screens from the National Museum of Japanese History that depict bustling scenes highlighting the achievements of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the Third Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

    If you’re a fan of anime, then don’t miss a visit to Tokyo Pop Town, which is divided into two areas - the Cool Zone and the Hot Zone. Both are packed with stores selling anime-related toys and souvenirs, as well as entertainment areas featuring race-slot cars and a planetarium. Pick up any last-minute travel goods and sweets at Soradonki in the Hot Zone or head to the official Hello Kitty Japan store in the Cool Zone.

    If you want to watch the planes taking off and landing, head to the free observation deck that’s located on the 5th floor of the International Terminal. By day you can soak up incredible views towards Mount Fuji while at night, you can see the moon illuminating the cityscape below. Aside from its views, the observation deck also features a cafe that’s open until late and serves its very own craft beer, Haneda Sky Ale.

    The JR EAST Travel Service Center is the place to head if you want to redeem your exchange order for a Japan Rail Pass or purchase a JR Tokyo Wide Pass. Their friendly, English-speaking staff can provide assistance in negotiating JR East’s extensive transportation network, which includes both Shinkansen bullet trains and Express trains throughout Tokyo and northern Honshu. After you’ve got your ticket, simply pass through the ticket gate next to the center and jump aboard the Tokyo Monorail.

    You can find more general tourist information about traveling in Tokyo and northern Honshu at the Tourist Information Corner on the 2nd floor of the International Terminal. Aside from getting information about JR tickets and travel coupons, you can also make hotel reservations or ask questions about how to get to particular destinations. Some of their friendly staff speak English and there are English-language travel brochures available.

    If you want to have your luggage delivered directly to your hotel, there are services available from JALABC and the ANA Sky Building Service on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the International Terminal.
    Alternatively, you can also deliver your luggage from a nearby convenience store, such as Seven Eleven, Family Mart and Lawson. When it’s time to return to the airport, you can have your luggage collected from the Kanto area two days before departure (3 pm – 5 pm) and it will be ready and waiting at the airport for you.

    There’s also the option to store your luggage temporarily at the airport with Japan Airport Techno who have facilities on both the 2nd and 3rd floors of the International Terminal. The maximum storage period is two weeks and the price depends on the size of your luggage, ranging from 300 yen a day for bags less than 120cm in length to 800 yen a day for bags more than 200cm in length (a limit of 300cm and 30kg is enforced).

    While there’s free Wi-Fi available throughout the Haneda International Airport, you can rent a Wi-Fi router to use while traveling in Japan at a number of service centers on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the International Terminal. It’s best to have a reservation to ensure availability but you can also just turn up and apply on the day if there is stock. Head to the Mobile Center or AnyFone Japan on the 2nd floor, with SoftBank Global Rental, Xcom Global and Docomo situated on the 3rd floor.

    If you’re arriving late at night or have an extended layover, the First Cabin capsule hotel in Terminal 1 is an easy way to get some sleep. They have four types of rooms to select from, including spacious First Class Cabins and Business Class Cabins, as well as affordable Premium Economy Class Cabin. If you prefer more of a classic-style hotel room, they also offer Premium Class Cabins at a reasonable price. To access Terminal 1, simply jump on one of the free shuttle buses from the International Terminal.

    If you need to transfer from a domestic flight to an international flight (or vice versa), there are free shuttle buses that connect each of the terminals at the Haneda International Airport. The journey takes around six minutes and there are two types of buses - a green one that goes to the International Terminal and a white bus that travels between the Domestic Terminals 1 and 2. Buses depart from the 1st floor of the International Terminal at stop number 0, from stop number 8 at Terminal 1 and from stop number 9 at Terminal 2.

    Passengers transferring to the International Terminal Station, Domestic Terminal 1 Station and Domestic Terminal 2 Station can also take advantage of a free Transit Ticket between the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail. You’ll need to present your passport and airline ticket to access the free pass, which is available at information counters inside of each terminal.

    If you need to move between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, there’s an underground passageway that can be accessed near the ticket gate of the Keikyu Line platform. It extends for about 400 meters in length and features a moving sidewalk that makes it easy to navigate even if you have luggage in tow.
