A guide to using the foreigner-only PASMO PASSPORT in Japan

If you don’t want the hassle of trying to get a refund for your PASMO card at the end of your time in Japan, then the PASMO PASSPORT is the answer! This transportation IC card is specifically for foreign travelers but with the same function and use as the standard PASMO card. It can be used for electronic payments at supermarkets, vending machines, and cooperative stores, as well as offering a few features that set it apart.

    No deposit required

Unlike most other transport cards in Japan, you don’t pay a deposit when buying a PASMO PASSPORT. The 2,000 yen purchase price includes a 500 yen issuance fee and 1,500 yen of transport credit, meaning you don’t have to deal with the complicated procedure of returning the card to receive a deposit refund before heading home. But keep in mind that once your PASMO PASSPORT expires, the pre-stored money cannot be refunded. So it’s recommended that you only store a small amount on the card so it’s not wasted.
