OKU-SHIBUYA

Just a few minutes away from the world’s busiest intersection is a part of the city with a very different vibe and much lower density of selfie sticks. Oku-Shibuya, or inner shibuya, is an up and coming neighbourhood that is well worth a visit.

It is easy to be deceived into thinking that the interesting part of Shibuya end somewhere around the intersection with Don Quijote on one side and the culture centre Bunkamura on the other. However, if you continue further down this street, past a seemingly boring stretch with parking lots on both sides, you will get to one of the most up and coming areas in Tokyo right now.

Previously known only as Kamiyamacho and Tomigaya, this area is currently trying to re-brand itself as Oku-Shibuya (inner Shibuya). At the time of writing, there are even flags hanging along the main street promoting its new identity.

The area runs alongside Yoyogi-park, behind the NHK headquarters. The nearest station is Yoyogi Koen on Chiyoda Line or Yoyogi-Hachiman on Odakyu line, but also Shibuya station is within a comfortable walk away.

This part of town has transformed a lot in the recent years, going from a quiet albeit upscale neighbourhood, to one of the most attractive areas of town. There is a good reason for this – all the quirky shops, good bars, restaurants and cafés that have popped up recently in the area draw a crowd. And the vibe manages to strike the right balance between local and edgy. Here are some of our favourite reasons to visit Oku-Shibuya.

    Fuglen

This quirky shop is a mixture of café, furniture shop and bar. Their cocktails has been called the best in Tokyo and their coffee blend deemed good enough to be served at Takeshi Murakamis café Zingaro in Nakano. Most of the furniture in the shop is in vintage Scandinavian style, and for sale.

    MJ & Friends

A lifestyle shop that sells everything from bikes and stationery items to books and magazines. Their selection on stylish independent travel magazines deserves an honourable mention. Their focus, however, is on coffee brewing products. At the back of the store, there is a small coffee counter, where you can try out brew your own coffee and try their products before you buy them.

    Pivone

Cute concept store that offers a wide variety of goods. From clothes to beauty and interior products as well as plants and flowers. And, of course, they also have a small café section. Someone else noticing a pattern here?

    Shibuya Publishing Booksellers

One of our favourite bookstores in Tokyo. Open until midnight and has a great selection of magazines and books on art, design and travel. This is also the office for a small publishing company, with only a glass wall separating the hard working staff from the people browsing in the store.

    Uplink

A small cinema focusing on international film, many good movies that slip under the radar of the major cinema chains are snatched up by Uplink. They also have a small restaurant called Tabela that serves delicious couscous and a handful of other dishes.

    Tomigaya Terrace

French bistro and wine bar quite far up on Honten Dori, not far from Yoyogi Hachiman Station. They have a good selection of wines, good food and very, very reasonable prices.

    418 Kamiyama

Burger bar with some of the cutest Sliders (that is a fancy name for mini hamburgers) that we have seen. Their burgers are impressive too, of course. Cosy place that is a good starting point for further barhopping in the area. Open during lunch and from 5pm until midnight.

    Papabubble

Candy shop where aside from satisfying your sweet tooth you can also watch a bunch of young candy makers produce all the goodies by hand, right in front of your eyes. Our favourite is the beautiful marshmallows which look almost like soap bars.
