    Tsubobatake(壺畑)

Tsubobatake is located on the premises of Sakamoto Kurozu, a famous brewer of kurozu black vinegar – a local delicacy. The restaurant specializes in Japanese cuisine made with black vinegar and locally sourced vegetables, meat, and fish. You can also take a tour to learn about the brewing process which has remained unchanged since the Edo Period.

    Myoken Ishihara-so(妙見石原荘)

Myoken Ishihara-so is a high end restaurant that serves beautiful, seasonal course meals called kaiseki ryōri in an elegant Japanese setting. All the ingredients are local and fresh. Be prepared to pay for the great service and excellent food, though. Course pricing begins at about $100 a person. Kids can expect to pay between $30 and $40 each so make sure they bring their wallets too. Ishihara-sō’s main business is a ryokan with hot springs, so you may just want to book a room!

    Omasa(大政)

If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, Omasa is probably more your style. This shop is super casual and sells yaki tori. The cheapest item on the menu is ¥80. The most expensive is ¥550. Oh, and if you’re done driving for the day check this out: all you can drink shochu (choose from a number of locally brewed varieties) will only set you back ¥300!

    Ashibi(馬酔木)

Ashibi is an upscale izakaya with traditional interior and tatami floors. They specialize in small dish cuisine centered on seafood and sake. Interestingly, in the afternoon they sell bentō so you can take something with you if you go hiking or sightseeing. Dinner will cost between ¥3000 and ¥4000.

    Fukiage-an(吹上庵)

Fukiage-an is a typical soba shop with a traditional wooden interior. Some dishes feature kurobuta, black haired pigs for which Kagoshima is famous. Fukiage-an is a fast and healthy option for lunch or dinner. The best part is that most dishes are under 10 bucks.

    Ichiniisan(いちにぃさん)

Ichiniisan is a local Kagoshima chain (they have a few shops in Tokyo too). As you can guess they focus on local Satsuma dishes, especially kurobuta. Other items on the menu are tonkatsu, shabu shabu, soba, etc. A good meal for 1 person cost you ¥1000 to ¥2000. Extremely reasonable!
