    Take a Sand Bath

OK, if you’re going to Ibusuki, chances are you’re going for 砂蒸し風呂 sunamushi onsen, the city’s number one claim to fame. Because the area is volcanic, the beach is by geothermal heats the beach. Visitors are buried in the sand for 10-15 minutes (as long as you take it), then you’ll wash off the sand, and soak in a regular hot spring.

    Relax in a Normal Onsen

If laying in hot sand doesn’t sound appealing, there are plenty of normal onsen in Ibusuki – including open air baths. Most of these are attached to hotels, as is the norm in Japan, but some are freestanding. One destination, famous for its breathtaking view of Mt. Kaimondake, is Healthy Land – one of the most well-known onsen in Kyushu. You can also take a sand bath or use an indoor bath, too.

    See How Samurai Lived

The town of Chiran has preserved a street of old samurai residences. The houses are maintained by families so you can’t go inside, however 7 gardens are open to the public. Enter the neighborhood from the north and you can buy a pass that gives you access to all of the gardens and a much better view of the estates. Very cool for you history buffs!

    Hike Mt. Kaimondake

Mt. Kaimondake is an active volcano forming a small peninsula in the East China Sea (don’t worry, the last eruption was in 885). The mountain stands at 924 meters and isn’t a particularly tough trek, but there are a few difficult stretches. A hike up and back down Mt. Kaimondake will take about 4-5 hours so be sure to bring some snacks and plenty of water.

For those of you crazy enough to take your golf clubs with you everywhere, there are 2 great golf clubs in the area: Ibusuki Golf Club (Kaimon Course) and Cosmo Tanegashima Golf Resort. Both courses offer you spectacular seaside views.
