  • Shionoha Onsen
    Nara Yoshino-gun Kawakamimura Shionoha 391
    A rare carbonic acid-containing alkaline spring was discovered while boring 150 meter into the ground in the Hato no Tani valley, leading to the building of the Shionoha Onsen Yumoto Yamabatoyu hot spring inn. The hot spring's waters are said to treat nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, motor paralysis, chronic digestive diseases, chronic women's diseases, hysteria, sensitivity to cold, bruises, sprains, and nine other ailments. The inn's outdoor bath offers a sweeping view of a dam lake enwrapped in the Yoshino cedar forest, and as time passes its waters turn from colorless to a golden yellow; this coupling of gorgeous scenery and colored waters engenders a sense of paradise in bathers. The inn's cuisine, made with locally caught river fish, edible wild plants, and vegetables is also renowned, and dishes such as the Koyo Nabe hotpot, boar stew, and duck hotpot boast many fans.

  • Arima Onsen
    Hyogo Kobe-shi Kita-ku Arimacho
    This hot spring district, Japan's oldest, is noted in the Nihon Shoki, The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, and many other ancient texts. It is said the area was a favorite of many intellectuals and emperors, as well, including Emperor Jomei and Emperor Kotoku. The area's springs are a mixture of carbon dioxide springs, chloride springs, and five other spring varieties, something found hardly anywhere in the world; containing an abundance of minerals and metasilicic acid, their waters have powerful antibacterial and moisturizing properties. They are said to aid recovery from fatigue and promote health in addition to alleviating eczema, hives, atopy, and other skin diseases; burns; cuts; and a variety of other ailments.

  • Dorogawa Onsen
    Nara Yoshino-gun Tenkawamura Dorogawa
    A hot spring district situated 800 meters above sea level near the entrance to a trail leading up Mt. Omine, a mountain viewed as holy in the Shugendo religion. Since ancient times, this area's hot springs have soothed Shugendo ascetics and travelers. The area's mildly alkaline hypotonic simple springs are notable for being extremely gentle on the skin and being comfortable to climb into. Their waters are said to ease muscle soreness, joint pain, nerve pain, sensitivity to cold, chronic digestive diseases, and other ailments, and the bathhouses here bustle with customers, particularly mountain climbers. Also renowned for leaving one's skin smooth, moisturized, and soft, the area's baths are popular with women. This hot spring district is also close to Dorogawa Springs, considered one of Japan's 100 most beautiful water areas, and tofu, made with the vaunted waters from this place, is a local specialty.

    A history-leaden hot spring district records state was discovered by the great monk Saicho, founder of Tendai Buddhism, 1,200 years ago. Situated at the foot of holy Mt. Hiei near such famous Shiga destinations as Lake Biwa and the Hiyoshi Taisha shrine, this hot spring district is also conveniently close to Kyoto and Osaka and bustles year-round with tourists making use of it as a base for their sightseeing activities. The area's highly alkaline simple springs have a pH of 9.0; gentle on the skin and body, their waters are renowned for their beautifying properties, and are particularly popular with women because they leave the skin soft and smooth.

    Wakayama Nishimuro-gun Shirahamacho
    A hot spring district which was discovered over 1,300 years ago and which is considered one of Japan's three greatest ancient hot spring sites. Also noted in the ancient Man'yoshu and the Nihon Shoki, records state that many nobles and members of the Imperial Family, such as Empress Saimei and Emperor Monmu, bathed here. One of the highlights of this hot spring district is its location, which offers a commanding view of beautiful white sand beach and vast blue ocean, and the area bustles with tourists and hot spring-lovers particularly during swimming season. hydrogen carbonate springs, chloride spring, and sulfur springs are found in the area, differing by location and facility, and visitors can also enjoy bathing in and comparing their varying qualities.

    Osaka Minoo-shi Onsencho
    This hot spring district, designated as Meiji no mori Mino Quasi-national Park, is surrounded by natural beauty, and the skytop outdoor bath operated by the district's sole hotel offers a sweeping view of Osaka Plain. The hot spring waters here are some of the best in the Kansai region; a certified recuperative spring, it is also known as the Hot Spring of Life. This distinctive sodium bicarbonate chloride spring (formerly deemed a sodium chloride-containing sodium bicarbonate boric acid spring) is said to treat such ailments as neurasthenia, chronic women's diseases, nerve pain, and rheumatism, in addition to engendering beautiful skin. The city of Minoh is a renowned fall foliage destination, and in the autumn the foliage found in Meiji no mori Mino Quasi-national Park is particularly spectacular; Minoh Waterfall, located inside the park, has been selected as one of Japan's 100 most beautiful waterfalls. Tourism attractions such as Expo'70 Commemorative Park, the location of the famous Tower of the Sun art installation, are also located nearby, and the district makes an excellent place from which to base area sightseeing activities.

    Kyoto Kyotango-shi Aminocho Hamazume
    Facing Yuhigaura, the western side of the Tango Peninsula, this relatively new hot spring district was first developed in 1980. The entire surrounding area is a renowned sightseeing destination and bustles with many tourists year-round. The area's sunsets are particularly beautiful and the source of its name (Yuhigaura means Sunset Beach). The area's clear hypotonic and mildly alkaline high temperature springs are said to aid recovery from fatigue in addition to helping alleviate nerve pain, muscle soreness, frozen shoulders, and rheumatic diseases. Their waters are also soft and renowned for their beautifying properties, leaving the skin nice and smooth.

    Wakayama Higashimuro-gun Nachikatsuuracho
    A hot spring district situated along the sea at the foot of Mt. Nachi registered as part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage Site. Notable for its over 100 source springs and abundant volume of piping hot water, in 2014 the area was designated the Nanki Kumano Geopark. Hotel Urashima's Boukido Cave is a large hot spring bath facility housed inside a natural cave carved out by the raging waves of the Kumano Sea. The Hotel Nakanoshima's Kishu Chomon no Yu is a seaside outdoor bath from which bathers can enjoy watching the waves break right before their eyes. There are many renowned baths carved out by Mother Nature herself here, and Kii-Katsuura Station's strolling garden is dotted with footbaths.

  • Totsukawa Hot spring village
    Nara Yoshino-gun Totsukawamura Hiradani‧Musashi‧Detani
    A hot spring district located in Totsukawa Village, Japan's largest village, located on the southernmost tip of Nara Prefecture. 96% of the village's area is covered with mountain forest, which is otherwise largely filled with inns, hotels, and shops. The village has gained much attention as being the first in Japan to declare that all of the hot spring bathhouses within its borders are constantly replenished with fresh water kakenagashi style from a natural source spring. Discovered by a charcoal maker in 1688, the district stands on the shore of the lake created by Futatsuno Dam. The area's sodium hydrogen carbonate springs are said to ease cuts and burns. All of the hot spring baths in the area make absolutely no use of chlorine, dilution, or recirculation, and are constantly refilled with fresh, high quality waters from a source spring. Totsukawa Hot Spring refers collectively to the hot springs found in the main hot spring district, Tosenji, Totsukawa, and Kamiyu.
