A hot spring inn located a 30 minute drive from Kakunodate Station, records state that the Satake clan, which ruled the area from Kakunodate Castle, made a gift of lumber to the village of Hirokunai in the Edo period to manage the hot spring here. The inn constantly replenishes its baths straight from the source spring kakenagashi style. The waters of the sodium calcium sulfate spring have been loved by locals since ancient times and are said to treat such ailments as chronic skin diseases, hardening of the arteries, obesity, diabetes, and gout. There are also many places nearby where visitors can take in the area's vast natural beauty to refresh both body and soul, such as lovely Dakigaeri Gorge, known as the Yaba Gorge of Tohoku; and Hachimantai, a mountainous district sprawling from Akita to Iwate.
