The Kume Island sea turtle building is a museum and display facility dedicated to sea turtles, which is located on Oujima Island in Kumejima District. The facility breeds sea turtles (which are on the verge of extinction); visitors can get a close view of sea turtles swimming about in large tanks; and there are display panels and videos providing information about their natural habitat; the facility also holds occasional special events when visitors can have the opportunity to handle turtles themselves. The facility also has displays of over 2,000 shells from different shellfish found in Kume Island.

I personally prefer to see turtles in the ocean but I was nearby so I figured I’d check it out. Entry was only 300 JPY, which is good value. There were some turtles in very small pools which I was...

The Kumejima Museum is located in Kadekaru, Kume-jima cho near Municipal Kumejima Hospital. The Museum has displays about Kume-jima’s natural heritage and history - focusing on the four main themes of “Kume-jima’s Natural Heritage,” “How Kumi-jima has Changed Over Time,” “Kume-jima’s Historical Treasures,” and “The Island Way of Life”—so visitors can learn about the Island before they travel round it. A tablet PC digital guide system has been introduced for the permanent exhibitions, so that visitors can listen to explanations of the exhibits in English.

島の自然、歴史、文化を紹介する小さな博物館です。かつての名称は自然文化センター、島内観光出発前に立ち寄るべし。入館料200円、月曜休館。

Situated approximately 100 kilometers west of Naha, the island is located in the most westerly position of the Okinawan archipelago. Since the Ryukyu dynastic period, it was also called “Kumi island” due to its beauty. Such as the reef “Hateno beach”, the pure white sands made from coral and the beauty of the cobalt blue sea—It is said to be the most beautiful in the Orient. On the other hand, this is also an ideal diving spot where you can encounter humpback whales, whale sharks, dolphins, etc. There are a number of strong Okinawan liquors (Awamori) distilled from rice or millet from Kume Island and these are also very popular among strong Okinawan liquors. In 1983 in the Showa period, almost all of the island was designated as a prefectural natural park.

Eef Beach, which is the main beach on Kume-jima island, is a beautiful expanse of white sand extending for 2 kilometers. The beach has a gently shelving bottom with gentle waves, and has been selected for inclusion in “Japan’s Top 100 Best Beaches.” There are a number of resort hotels and restaurants nearby. During the busy season, Eef Beach is a popular spot for water-sports, and also receives many tourists who just want to relax on the beach.

Hateno Beach is located on an uninhabited island off the east coast of Kume-jima Island; the island actually comprises three beaches—Maeno Beach, Nakano Beach, and Hateno Beach—but the name Hateno Beach is used to refer collectively to the whole island. Pure white sand and crystal-clear seas stretch out for as far as the eye can see; the beach has been described as the most beautiful in all of East Asia. Visitors can enjoy swimming and paddling by the beach, snorkeling, beachcombing, etc. Hateno Beach is about 20 minutes by boat from the Tomari Fisharina marina.

Original cuisine and Okinawa cooking using ingredients from Kume Island are offered at this Japanese-style pub. Sample fish caught off the coast of the island are served in the sashimi platter. Japanese leek, purple yam, goya, and other ingredients figure in the “island vegetable tempura,” and there's also “Agu pork green onion and salt stir-fry” and several other menu options. You can hire someone to drive your vehicle for you anywhere on the island for 1,000 yen, which means you can enjoy all the awamori (millet brandy) you please. The establishment is located diagonally opposite from the Resort Hotel Kume Island.

レトロな外観も気に入りましたがごはんが全部美味しかったです。ハズレなしです。波路は混みまくっていましたがこちらは程よい入り具合で、美味しかったです。

This castle ruins are located on Mt. Uegusuku, the highest mountain on Kume Island with an elevation of 310 meters. The big 360-degree panoramic view overlooking almost the whole area of the island is just “overwhelming’”. It’s a perfect viewpoint that allows views as far as Hateno Beach, Awakuni Island and Tonaki Island on clear days.

"This precipitous cliff approximately 200 meters above the sea is situated along Prefectural Route 242 between the communities of Hiyajo and Aka. From this scenic destination, on clear days visitors can see all the way to Hatenohama and even the Kerama Islands. ""Banta"" means ""cliff"" or ""precipice"" in the Okinawa language. There's an observatory and shop on a hill near the road, as well, making this a viable rest point when going on a drive around the island."

Kumejima Hotaru no Sato Natural Park Kumejima Firefly Pavilion located along the lower Urauchi River is a protective observation facility for firefly and opened in May 2000. It breeds fireflies including the Kumejima firefly, a Natural Monument and one of Japan’s rare fauna and flora, and creatures such as birds, insects and fish related to fireflies. Inside the facility, the exhibits include pictures, specimens and documents, so you can learn about the diversity of animals, particularly fireflies, as well as nature and the environment on Kume Island.

Kumejima Tsumugi no Sato Yuimaru-kan Exhibition Museum is about Kumejima tsumugi, which is a traditional Okinawan craft and designated as a national Important Intangible Cultural Property. Inside the museum, you can observe the process of tying kasuri (dotted pattern), dyeing and knitting, and see documents related to the history and manufacturing processes for Kumejima tsumugi as well as various works using Kumejima tsumugi. You can also experience activities such as knitting a coaster and dyeing a bandana (a booking is required in advance.)

Namiji located on “Ifu Beach”, a beach which is the emblem of Kume Island, is a restaurant with a homely atmosphere. You can enjoy reasonably priced Okinawan cuisine such as a diver’s dish and sushi using fresh seafood, and various other types of dishes. The recommended dish of the day and the homemade fish cake made from minced fish caught in the neighboring sea are popular. It sells delicatessens and lunch boxes at lunchtime.

Goeda Pine of Kume is counted as the top two famous pine trees in Okinawa boasted by Kume Island. The tree divided into five branches stretches in all directions and completely covers an area of 250 square meters. It is about 250 years old. It is also habitat for the Kumejima firefly, and the dance of fireflies lit up in white can be enjoyed in early May.

These rocks are on the coast of Ojima Island, east of Kumejima. This group of rarely shaped rocks are a nationally designated Natural Monument. There are over 1,000 of these pentagon and hexagon-shaped rocks also called “kamegoiwa” (tortoise rocks) that can be seen during low tide. Their surfaces are eroded flat from the waves, and they are a work of art produced by nature.

Sago palm trees located in Une, Kumejima Town, Shimajiri County. Visitors can pay admission to see these two trees, 4 meters and 6 meters tall, growing in the garden of a traditional-style house. The trees are said to be as much as 300 years old, but their exact age is unknown. They have been designated Prefectural Natural Monuments.

"A hilly road in Gushikawa, Kumejima Town, Shimajiri County. Its name ""Obake"" means ""ghost,"" but it is not a haunted spot. Drivers can experience the odd sense that their car seems to roll up what looks like the upward slope."
