This local restaurant uses a kominka (old house) centered on Asato residence, constructed in the late Meiji period (1868–1912). In the afternoon, in addition to Okinawan soba wheat noodles, you can enjoy their prided Agu pork dishes and steak using wagyu beef from the prefecture, and reservations are only available for the shabu-shabu course and wagyu steak. They only offer courses of Ryukyu dishes or Agu pork at night.

Make your reservations online as the place can be packed. We ordered the Agu pork shabu shabu set for 3 persons and really enjoyed the meat and the fresh vegetables. The resulting broth at the end...

Okinawa soba noodles have various tastes depending on the region. At this store, their hand-prepared and thin 100% wheat flour sea lettuce noodles using homemade sea lettuce without preservatives are popular. The soup base is rich with pork and bonito, but the noodles go perfectly with the simple soup. Fish cakes with sea lettuce, pork ribs, sea lettuce and red pickled ginger are used as topping.

We popped by this restaurant for lunch on a Friday afternoon in October 2019 as we were on our way to Nago. The restaurant was not fully crowded and seats were available quite shortly, thanks to the...

Seaside Drive-in in Onna Village, Okinawa Prefecture is an American-style restaurant. It is open 24 hours, and everything on the menu which is a fusion of Japanese and Western is available for take-out. Despite the American-style facade, it is a fun place which has a range of antique toys and an aquarium where you can see tropical fish. It faces the sea so you can gaze at the beautiful sunset in the evening.

Loved the charm of the place. Our Okinawan friend took us here on our way to our hotel and we thought it was a lot of fun and great value for money!

Located in Motobu, Kunigami District near a municipal market, Kishimoto Shokudo is a famous, long-established Okinawan Soba noodles restaurant, which was founded in 1905. Kishimoto Shokudo’s second branch, the Yaedake Branch, is located to the east of the main branch on Prefectural Highway 84 near the entrance to Yae-dake (Mt. Yae). Using the same recipes as the main branch, the Yaedake Branch serves Okinawan Soba noodles with full-bodied noodles prepared using charcoal, and a simple broth, as well as Jushi (Okinawan rice porridge). As at the Main Branch, the entire menu basically consists of variations on these two items (diners can choose what size Soba noodles they want).

If you have gave this place a bad review it’s because your stupid and have no idea what your eating. The deal here is that this place is well over a hundred years old and the recipes haven’t...

This hamburger shop is said to be the best one in Okinawa. It boasts an overwhelming popularity because of their large and tasty burgers and reasonable price. Besides hamburgers, they also offer highly satisfying large drinks. The wait is often long for this popular shop, but you definitely want to eat here at least once if you go to Okinawa.

I didnt dine in here but ordered take-out. While waiting for my burger my clothing quickly soaked up the smell of fried burgers from the kitchen. The food was really good, amongst one of the best...

Kishimoto Cafeteria is a long-established (founded in 1905) Okinawan Soba Noodles restaurant located in Motobu Town. The restaurant’s signature dish is its hand-made “Ash Soba Noodles,” made with broth derived from the clear upper layer of water that has had rice straw ash dissolved in it. The rich-flavored dried bonito soup stock and thick hand-made noodles have remained largely unchanged since the restaurant was first established. Kishimoto Cafeteria is very popular with both tourists and locals.

If you are exploring the northeast of Okinawa island you owe it to yourself to try and have lunch here. They specialise in the local Okinawan soba noodles and it was one of the best lunches we had on...

Despite being located a two-hour drive from Naha Airport in Motobu Town, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture, this Okinawa soba noodle restaurant is so popular, lines of waiting customers form outside its door. Operating out of an Okinawan style wooden Japanese home with a red tile roof, the restaurant's tatami mat seating gives it an old fashioned, Showa period atmosphere. The establishment's medium thick noodles are served in a fairly thick skipjack tuna based broth. Here customers can enjoy soki soba noodles topped with sweet and salty stewed spare rib, and san-mai niku soba topped with three strips of sweet and salty stewed boneless pork rib. Lines often form outside the door before the restaurant even opens and the establishment closes when supplies run out. This popular restaurant is frequently featured on television and in magazines.

There was a small queue of people waiting to get in when we arrived - a sign that the food was worth waiting for! The queue does move quickly though. They only have 2 dishes available, soba with pork...

This American fast food restaurant has a history that began when it opened as a root beer stand in California in 1919. The Nago Branch offers a morning menu with popular items such as their triangle wraps that can be eaten with one hand. In addition to hamburgers and hot dogs, their extensive menu with a rich side menu and seasonal items is guaranteed to satisfy both children and adults.

"This food truck on Okinawa Prefecture's Kouri Island serves original garlic shrimp menus modeled after the shrimp trucks of North Shore on Hawaii's Oahu Island. Each of their four different shrimp plates comes with rice. Customers can also add portion of grilled Onaha beef, a brand-name beef of Okinawa. Another popular offering is their shiri shiri (Okinawan for ""finely cut"") french fries. Customers can order items to go and even enjoy them on the beach."

This place gets rave reviews for being well seasoned rice and shrimp. The price is quite high for what you get, we paid about ¥1,500 per order. The shrimp is not shelled so it becomes a bit of an...

In the Asian flavor café, they offer menus using seasonal ingredients produced in Okinawa. In the evening, you can watch the sunset over Ie Island through the glass wall of the shop or from the terrace seating area.

This zenzai (red bean sweet) specialty shop is in Toguchi of Motobu Town in Kunigami County, across from the town market. Okinawa's zenzai is different from that of Honshu in that it generally refers to shaved ice combined with sweet boiled kidney beans and other toppings. “Aragaki Zenzai” only serves this type of zenzai, and since the store opened, it has enjoyed popularity for over 50 years.

This long-standing dining hall is on National Route 58 in Ogimi Village in the Kunigami County. It’s known for its “gyuniku soba” (beef soba), which features mounds of stir-fried bean sprouts seasoned with black pepper as well as beef. There’s also “soki soba” (Okinawan noodles made from wheat powder) and “yakiniku okazu” (grilled meat side dish), among other original Okinawan dishes. There’s often a long line in the afternoon at this popular spot.

Dont miss the gyuniku soba! A huge amount of stir fried beef and moyashi over a bowl of noodles. Moyashi is at the right point, not raw but still very crunchy. And all that beef juice slowly...

This restaurant is located in Kouri of Nakijin Village in the southern part of Kouri Island. The chef once worked at a famous Ginza restaurant, and here he uses fresh Kouri Island fish and seasonal vegetables along with other select ingredients to create dishes that bring out the ingredients’ natural taste. A great view of Kouri-ohashi Bridge is another reason to visit.

Kouri Island is itself well worth a visit, and the same definitely goes for L LOTA, located half-way up the hill overlooking the bridge between Kouri and Yagaji Island. Finding it and parking can be...

Located near the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, this butterfly garden contains a restaurant and Japan’s largest species of butterfly, the “tree nymph butterfly.” This massive area is a treasure trove of rare creatures, including Ryukyu tree lizards and the Polyura eudamippus, which has been designated a Natural Monument. The restaurant offers a splendid view of Minna Island and Sesoko Island as well as “gozen ryori” (“imperial cuisine”) that is prepared with an abundance of Okinawan ingredients. “Choju ryuhan” is a dish featuring rice topped with six different ingredients said to promote longevity and served with a medicinal soup. “Motobu gyugozen” features sweet, soft pork rich in flavor. Plenty of other local cuisine is available as well.

My tour group stopped here briefly for lunch. There is a lovely garden and butterfly greenhouse here. You can see the cocoons and several types of butterflies here. They have set up flower bouquets...

This restaurant is where you can taste of healthy Agu pork while making the most of the flavor of Yanbaru Island pork. You steam the fresh meat at your table. Although their course with ingredients steamed on bamboo trays is popular, they also have well-reputed menu items such as Agu pork and goya bitter gourd chanpuru, braised Ryubiton pork, which used to be a court dish during the times of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and Agu pork steamed dumpling.

This Okinawan pork restaurant cherishes the idea of eating pork raised on Yanbaru (northern part of Okinawa Island) in Yanbaru. Besides pork carefully raised on a ranch located 15 minutes away by car, the restaurant uses items such as vegetables and seasonings made on Yanbaru. They have many popular menu items such as their yakiniku BBQ meat assortment where you can enjoy 16 different cuts of meat, shabu-shabu and lightly grilled salt-pickled pork.

This place got really busy and stayed that way for the 2 hours we were here. A good sign of being in the right place. This was my first experience with what they called Shabu Shabu. We ordered a...

This cafe has seats that offer a sweeping view of the East China Sea. Enjoy cuisine made with Okinawan ingredients as you gaze at the beauty of the blue water. The “fresh Ryukyu pasta” contains rafute (Okinawan-style stewed pork cubes) and goya, while the “Ryukyu panini” contains Okinawan vegetables and boned rib. And for dessert, there’s “Nangoku mango pancakes” and other delicious options. There are plenty of menu options to enjoy. The cafe is located about seven minutes by car from the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. It’s open year-round and offers takeout.

It is a hidden little cafe from main road. Its a great place to chill out. I would say the drink is average however the view is superb. Its quiet and peaceful. You can walk to the beach within...

Umi Monogatari is an Izakaya (bar-restaurant) located adjacent to National Highway 58 in Onna Village, Kunigami District. Besides a menu that emphasizes fresh fish (delivered directly from Nago fishing harbor), diners can also enjoy Kusu Awamori (aged Awamori spirit). In addition, there are live folk song performances almost every day between 19:00 and 21:00. Umi Monogotari is very popular both with locals and tourists. A variety of dining options are available, including regular tables, horigotatsu (a heated table positioned in a depression in the floor), zashiki (tatami rooms for groups of up to 35 people), booths with tables, etc.

You can enjoy continental European cuisine mixed with ingredients from the prefecture with the panoramic view and sounds of the seaside. Please note that there is a dress code during dinner time. You can consult with them up to a week before about the seven main allergens.

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You've arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan's most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
