Restaurant Kuina is located inside the Kunigami Tourism Products Center and offers various Okinawan dishes, including meals featuring their specialty ingredient, “inobuta” (cross between wild boar and domestic pig). The dishes featuring inobuta, including the soba noodles, shabu shabu (thinly sliced meat boiled quickly with vegetables), and yakiniku (grilled meat) set, are especially recommended. There’s also the uniquely named “Nitoryu” (two-sword-style rice bowl), which was named after baseball player Otani when the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters held their spring training camp in Kunigami Village. The restaurant is spacious and has plenty of room for groups.

This cafe is at 2 Matsuo near the First Makishi Public Market. Its menu offerings, created by Yuko Yamanouchi, are based on the idea of “delicious breakfast enjoyed while traveling.” Among the offerings are granola, acai bowls, eggs benedict, pancakes, and other items made from ingredients purchased at the Makishi Public Market. Northern European furniture decorates the interior, whose décor is a fusion of styles from Okinawa, Hawaii, and Northern Europe.

Located near the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, this butterfly garden contains a restaurant and Japan’s largest species of butterfly, the “tree nymph butterfly.” This massive area is a treasure trove of rare creatures, including Ryukyu tree lizards and the Polyura eudamippus, which has been designated a Natural Monument. Plenty of other local cuisine is available as well.

Original cuisine and Okinawa cooking using ingredients from Kume Island are offered at this Japanese-style pub. Sample fish caught off the coast of the island are served in the sashimi platter. Japanese leek, purple yam, goya, and other ingredients figure in the “island vegetable tempura,” and there's also “Agu pork green onion and salt stir-fry” and several other menu options. There's also goya chanpuru, Okinawa soba, and other home-style cooking with plenty of vegetables. The main draw is their katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl). This long-standing dining hall is on National Route 58 in Ogimi Village in the Kunigami County. It’s known for its “gyuniku soba” (beef soba), which features mounds of stir-fried bean sprouts seasoned with black pepper as well as beef. There’s also “soki soba” (Okinawan noodles made from wheat powder) and “yakiniku okazu” (grilled meat side dish), among other original Okinawan dishes. There’s often a long line in the afternoon at this popular spot.

This is the company store for the long-standing “Koja Soba Factory” founded in 1932. The store has a calm air about it that women can feel comfortable entering alone. It’s popular with the locals, and the traditional, plain taste is as enjoyable as always. The most popular item is the “soki soba” (Okinawan noodles made from wheat powder). The springy noodles are topped with soft, sweet pork, and the soup is clear and has a light taste. Both the soba sets and individual item menu offer numerous options.

Great local soba dishes all for 850 yen - must try! Really enjoyable food in a nice location - close to the airport

This Western-style restaurant is located atop a plateau with a wonderful view. Special attention is paid to the ingredients, and meals are made with locally produced ingredients. The “Japanese-style hamburgs” are carefully handmade with 100% beef, making them popular with local customers. The set includes rice and pork miso soup, with free refills available. There are also pasta, pizza, gratin, and many other menu options. Customers can sit outside on the terrace and enjoy the view of the blue sea as they eat.

You’ll find this cafe and restaurant right after crossing the Kouri-ohashi Bridge. This popular spot has been featured on TV several times. The wooden building interior is decorated with seashells, and the wood produces an inviting atmosphere. This agu (Okinawan pork) restaurant uses “Kogachi agu” from the agu specialty store “Kippo” in its dishes, with “shio-yaki” (salt-grilled dish), “shabu shabu” (thinly sliced meat boiled quickly with vegetables), and other items making full use of the sweet and flavorful pork. There’s also dessert, with “Kibi soft cream,” which is topped with caramel sauce made from boiled sugarcane, enjoying particular popularity.

Ordered the curry rice (about 660Yen) and the sugar cane coffee. Great view of the bridge and water.

Situated on a small hill in Yaese Town, Shimajiri County, this restaurant features a red-brick design and offers local cuisine and sweets. The pure Ryukyu-style “karaya” tiled building is a registered Tangible Cultural Property. This restaurant has been repeatedly voted on sites such as “Hitosara” and “Tabelog” as having the “best lunch” and other distinctions. Their popular Okinawa soba uses a rich soup with a wonderfully light taste. There’s also “asa soba,” featuring noodles with sea lettuce kneaded into the flour, and “soy milk soba,” whose noodles contain soy milk. The dessert selection is impressive as well, with the “brown sugar zenzai (red bean sweet) with brown syrup and soybean flour” enjoying particular popularity. A wide selection of a la carte options is also available.

This restaurant specializes in Okinawa soba. Based on the concept of “harmony,” the soup is made using a painstaking process that takes two days, and it is full of the flavor of dried bonito and packed with savory flavor and richness. There are many types of soba available, including “hon-soki suba” (Okinawan soba with stewed pork spare ribs) and the meat-packed “kenpa suba.” There’s also a “children’s set” available on the side menu, which is perfect for families. As a special lunch promotion, whenever you order soba (with the exception of the mini soba), you can receive either “jushi” (Okinawan paella) or rice for free.

This Yaeyama soba specialty shop is known for its devotion to health. Enjoy an exquisite bowl of Yaeyama soba made from carefully selected ingredients, including the noodles, soup, and seasoning you sprinkle onto your noodles. The soba noodles are firm and thin flat noodles made without preservatives or artificial coloring. The soup contains no chemical additives and is made with pork produced on the island that is boiled for a long time to produce a light, refreshing taste. The “jushi” (Okinawan paella) has a Yaeyama flavor that you won’t find anywhere else.

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
