Kishimoto Cafeteria is a long-established (founded in 1905) Okinawan Soba Noodles restaurant located in Motobu Town. The restaurant’s signature dish is its hand-made “Ash Soba Noodles,” made with broth derived from the clear upper layer of water that has had rice straw ash dissolved in it. The rich-flavored dried bonito soup stock and thick hand-made noodles have remained largely unchanged since the restaurant was first established. Kishimoto Cafeteria is very popular with both tourists and locals.

Hamabe no chaya (“Seaside Tea-house”) is a café located in Nanjo City. As the name suggests, the cafe is situated right on the coast, with large windows that afford a great view of the ocean; a lot of diners choose to eat at the counter by the window for this reason. The food menu features dishes that make use of locally-sourced ingredients produced in Nanjo; beverage options include Okinawan herbal tea and original-blend coffee.

  • Yanbaru Soba
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Okinawa Pref. Kunigamigunmotobuchou Izumi 70-1
Despite being located a two-hour drive from Naha Airport in Motobu Town, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture, this Okinawa soba noodle restaurant is so popular, lines of waiting customers form outside its door. Operating out of an Okinawan style wooden Japanese home with a red tile roof, the restaurant's tatami mat seating gives it an old fashioned, Showa period atmosphere. The establishment's medium thick noodles are served in a fairly thick skipjack tuna based broth. Here customers can enjoy soki soba noodles topped with sweet and salty stewed spare rib, and san-mai niku soba topped with three strips of sweet and salty stewed boneless pork rib. Lines often form outside the door before the restaurant even opens and the establishment closes when supplies run out. This popular restaurant is frequently featured on television and in magazines.

Customers are greeted by two Okinawan lion dog statues and a small garden stand guard in front of the large white walled building. Theater seating is provided on the first floor while the second floor is occupied by banquet halls. There are five spacious banquet halls in all with table seating or more relaxed tatami mat seating. The full menu includes an array of a la carte dishes like Ishigaki beef steak and Okinawa style stews, plus course meals making use of Okinawa's unique culinary delights.

This zenzai (red bean sweet) specialty shop is in Toguchi of Motobu Town in Kunigami County, across from the town market. Okinawa's zenzai is different from that of Honshu in that it generally refers to shaved ice combined with sweet boiled kidney beans and other toppings. “Aragaki Zenzai” only serves this type of zenzai, and since the store opened, it has enjoyed popularity for over 50 years.

Okinawa Pref. Nahashi Makishi 1-1-39 STEP Building 1F
At the end of New Paradise Street along the way to Kokusai-dori Street, you’ll come across this ball donut specialty shop. As the name implies, ball donuts are donuts in the shape of a ball, and they’re different from sata andagi (Okinawan deep-fried dough buns). Basic ball donuts are covered in sugar made from sugarcane, though varieties topped with lemon and natural sugar, salt and butter, and “Churakoibeni (a kind of sweet potato)” are also available, among others.

We loved this small cafe with its signature ball donuts in many flavors but the signature will be lemon flavor. Worth a try

Sample the various vegetables of the island at this restaurant. Each vegetable has a unique scent and level of bitterness, and the meals use them in such a way to provide maximum enjoyment. The lunchtime pasta features multicolored noodles with shekwasha (flat lemon), vegetables, and dragon fruit. The “Emi Andagi” dish, available for takeout, is popular as well. With the exception of lunches left up to the chef and light meals, reservations must be made a day in advance.

I am so grateful we found this place as it does not market itself, but is truly a heart-based project from the owner. We were wanting to eat some local Okinawan food that was known for its longevity...

    Okinawa Nanjo Tamagusuku Kakinohana 8-1
This cafe is a one-minute walk from Kakinohana Spring, and its location atop a hill offers an excellent view of the sea. Besides terrace seats, there are also outdoor seats that allow pets. The interior is nice and spacious, so you can bring small children without worrying about bothering other customers. The menu features items such as homemade taco rice and curry that use Okinawan ingredients, as well as cakes and other sweets. The beef curry is slightly sweetened so that children have an easier time eating it.

Located in Nakijin Village in Kunigami County, this Japanese-style pub will make you feel like you’ve been transported back to the Showa period. The retro atmosphere is made more vibrant by the patrons, many of whom are foreign and of all ages. The dishes are mainly Okinawan, such as seared Nakijin beef and papaya chanpuru (Okinawan stir fry, only available during certain periods). One surprising feature is the faucet at each table that dispenses awamori (millet brandy), which is available for use if you get the three-hour all-you-can-drink course. With private rooms and tatami seating also available, there’s something to suit everyone’s needs.

This is a restaurant in the middles of no-where and it serves really great food! Service was excellent and we order from a tablet that offers several languages including Chinese, English, Korean...

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
