Located around seven minutes’ walk from the Prefectural Office Station on the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yuirail) line, Fukushu-en is a Chinese-style garden that was created to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of “sister-city” relations between Fuzhou City in China and Naha City, and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Naha City Government; it reflects the fact that Chinese culture exerted a considerable influence on Ryukyuan culture in the past. The verdant garden is divided into three sections—Ming, Wen, and Hua—and is filled with beautiful seasonal flowers throughout the year. The large pond in the center of the garden features a waterfall that creates a cooling ambience.

We walked toward downtown Naha from the cruise terminal, heading for Fukushuen Garden. For a 200 YEN entry fee you got to wander the grounds of a very serene and incredibly artistic garden with...

This Ryukyuan-style garden is in Naha City. It was first built in 1799 as a villa for the Ryukyuan kings. The garden was known as the “Southern Gardens” because of its location to the south of Shuri-jo Castle. With a winding-path design, this unique garden combines elements of Chinese and traditional Okinawan design. In 2000, the Shikina-en garden was included within the scope of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu UNESCO World Heritage Site. The red algae Thorea gaudichaudii C. Ag. (which has been designated as a National Natural Monument) was first discovered at the Ikutoku Spring in the Shikina-en Garden.

This is a garden with nice landscape (can take some nice shot here). The path is rocky and makes me wonder how people used to walk on these paths (so please bring your best walking shoes and prepare...

Southeast Botanical Gardens is located in Okinawa City, the middle of Main Island. It opened in 1968 and is popular not only among Japanese people but also overseas visitors. You can see about 1,300 types of plants. It is also full of attractions including a place where you can pet animals as well as take a guided tour on a cart which shows you inside the water paradise. One day is not enough to see everything. There are restaurants and cafés where you can glaze at tropical and sub-tropical plants while having a meal on a glass-walled terrace. About 60 minutes by car from Naha Airport.

Went here to see the lights in the botanical gardens and then had dinner in the restaurant. Good selection of food on the buffet. Unfortunately found a hair in one of my desserts.

OKINAWA Fruits Land located in Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture is a popular sightseeing place. It was refurbished in 2013 and reopened with the concept of an “interactive facility style / original story book” Tropical Kingdom Tale. You can learn about and enjoy the secret of fruit and the story of happiness and others through the tale. The “fruit zone” in the facility grows more than about 30 types of tropical fruit, such as papayas and mangos depending on the season. In the “shopping zone” you can try sweet pineapple. It also has a range of other facilities such as a restaurant, a café and a shop where you can buy souvenirs.

This theme park is mostly indoor and makes a good candidate for a rainy day activity. However, it probably is not the top of the list choice should you visit a park in the vicinity. Will not...

Okinawa Main Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You've arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan's most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
