The Amami Park is just a five-minute bus ride from the Amami Airport. This Amami Islands park is centered around the Tanaka Isson Museum, a Japanese artist, and introduces his works depicting the natural beauty and life of Amami. The park is also the home of the Amami no Sato exhibition center which displays the nature and village life of Amami Islands through scale model exhibits and videos. In the Nature and Culture Center, the Amami no Sato, one can enjoy the Ocean Path, the Island Path and the Forest Path exhibits, and the Amami Theater with high definition videos with surround sound acoustics. The Amami corner is set up as an introduction to the many islands while multiple events are held in the indoor event hall hosts multiple events and amphitheater hosts outdoor events.

This is a very popular leisure spot full of abundant natural scenery even among Amami Oshima Island. The park includes the Amami Kaiyo Museum (Maritime Museum), which introduces the types of animals inhabiting the waters adjacent to Amami Oshima Island, and Ohama Beach, which allows visitors to enjoy the cobalt blue ocean, white sandy beach, and coral reefs. In the center of the park is Kaigara Stage Hiroba, an amphitheater with a large seashell shape that serves as a venue for outdoor events, and in the bathhouse there are showers, toilets and coin lockers available. It’s also worth seeing the sun set as it sinks down in the East China Sea.

White sandy beach 1.5 hours drive from the airport. We loved the sunset . It was very quiet and peaceful. Would love to visit in May or June, when we could swim and snorkel.

干潮の時を狙っていきました。駐車場はわかりにくいですが、混んでいなかったのでスムースに停められました。混んでいるときは車の出入りすら苦労するかも。ハートロックのビーチはきれいでした。パラグライダーで見学する人もいました。思っていたより小さい潮だまりです。

A vast, primeval mangrove located a 70-minute drive from Amami Airport where visitors can come in contact with nature and enjoy outdoor activities year-round. In 2001, the mangrove was registered as part of the Roadside Station Amami Oshima Sumiyo facility. The second largest mangrove in Japan, the area is a habitat for rare plants and animals, including the Ryukyu ayu, a fish which has followed a unique evolutionary path. Canoeing through the thick mangrove is a particularly popular activity here. There’s also an outdoor recreation and relaxation space and an observatory offering a sweeping view of the primeval mangrove.

A facility where visitors can watch Amami Oshima tsumugi pongee cloth being made and try making it themselves located a two-minute walk from the Oshima Tsumugimura-iriguchi bus stop. Visitors can listen to a courteous guide and watch as Oshima tsumugi is laboriously crafted in the adjoining workshop. The facility also offers a variety of classes, including T-shirt and handkerchief dorozome mud dyeing, weaving, and kimono wearing. The facility’s shop sells Oshima tsumugi accessories and exclusive Oshima tsumugi items in both Japanese and Western designs offered no place else.

This virgin forest located about a 30-minute drive from Amami City is the most untouched subtropical broad-leaved tree forests left on Amami Oshima Island. The forest, which extends deep into the mountains of Naze, evokes images of ancient times. The forest's massive 10 meter-tall Cyathea lepifera ferns are living fossils whose fronds are believed to have been fodder for dinosaurs eons ago. The sunlight filtered through their large umbrella-like fronds creates a mystical spectacle to behold. The forest is also a habitat for rare wildlife such as Lidth's jay, a national Natural Monument, as well as the Okinawan tree lizard.

This is a museum where you can learn about the history, nature and life of the Amami archipelago including Riccho, Yoron Town, Yoron Island. The fifth floor observation deck, the highest floor on the island, offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area, and on days with good weather, the northern part of Okinawa and the neighboring islands can also be seen. You can enjoy exhibitions on different themes such as the sea and life from the first floor to the fourth floor. It also exhibits paintings by Masatoshi Ikeda, an artist from Yoron Island, items that belonged to Yoko Mori, who loved Yoron, and bicycles used in movies. It also introduces the special products and dialects of Yoron for an enjoyable tour.

島の高台に位置しているので、建物の最上階に昇れば東西南北すべてが眺められ、島の全貌を手に取れます。また、館内には、与論島の成り立ちや戦争、独自の民族文化まで学べます。より与論島が愛しくなります！

This observatory is located at an altitude of approximately 415 meters. From it, visitors can see various scenery, such as the cityscape of Koniya below, as well as Oshima Strait and Kakeromajima Island. It is also famous for its beautiful sunset views and many tourists visit in the evenings. There is a parking lot available, as well as a path surrounded by lush nature that leads up to the observatory.

古仁屋の街並みを見下ろす展望台です。国道５８号から外れ、車で１５分ほど山道を登っていくと着きます。展望台からは大島海峡や加計呂麻島、請島や与路島まで眺めあることができます。まさに多島美を実感できる場所です。そして、この展望台は夕日スポットとして有名です。訪れた日は雲がかかっていて完璧な夕日を見ることができませんでした。それでも、夕日に照らされた奄美諸島を眺めることができて満足です！

A historic tourist center built in 1974 located a one-hour drive from Amami Airport. The building stands two stories above ground and also has a basement floor and contains exhibits and videos on the poisonous habu snake. Established to convey the dangers of this animal, here visitors can learn about the history and ecology of habu. In addition to watching videos of habu and mongooses fighting, the museum has real live habu on display as well as specimens of animals eaten by habu. The facility’s souvenir and gift shop carries things like habu skin wallets and keychains as well as habu health foods.

一回見てみたかったハブとマングースの戦いが、奄美大島でマングースが絶滅したため中止となってました。 VTRとこの展示で500円と考えると少し500円も高く感じます。

The Center is located a two-minute drive from Kikai Airport. It contains a wide selection of local products, such as shochu made from brown sugar, brown sugar candy, and food items made with white sesame. It also carries Oshima pongee silk, which originate on Amami Oshima, so visitors can have a great time deciding which of the many available souvenirs to buy. In addition, a selection of clothing, accessories, food products, and even everyday goods. The supermarket inside the Center makes this a convenient place for routine shopping trips.

"This forest park that is about 20 hectares large is located at the foot of Mt. Yuwandake, the highest peak on Amami Oshima Island. There is a ""Fureai Zone"" where you can play in an adventure playground, a ""Waterfront Zone"" where you can see insects and aquatic animals in the pond and plaza, and a ""Mountain Stream Zone"" centered on Materiya Waterfall. There is also a campground where you can do sports training and learn about nature. You can enjoy Amami's first official grand golf course on the vast site empty-handed because you can rent golf clubs."

マテリアの滝を見に行った後、名音方面に向かう途中に偶然通りました。１月下旬はちょうど桜が満開のシーズンで、一面がピンクに染まっていました。名音方面は、道が悪いので通ったことを後悔したくらいなので、大和方面に戻ることをお勧めします。

Kagoshima Amami-shi Kasaricho Yani 1551

This scenic park on Amami Oshima's Cape Gamo features an observatory that offers park-goers a view of the East China Sea beyond Kasari Bay. It is also known for one of the best places in the prefecture to watch a sunset. According to legend passed down on the island, a watchtower was built here on the cape long ago by the Taira Clan to watch for pursuers after their disastrous defeat at the Battle of Dannoura. Cape Gamo is said to have been so-named because a Taira vassal named Gamo Saemon stood watch here.

国道から狭い道を登っていきます。笠利崎灯台方面から来ると、入口が分かりづらいので注意が必要です。展望台に上がると東シナ海や太平洋、笠利湾が見渡せる眺望ポイントがあります。訪れた日は雲がかかっていたため、夕日は見られませんでしたが、写真で見ると綺麗な夕焼けを眺めることができそうです。途中に蒲生神社があるので、そこでお参りをするのも良いでしょう。

This log cabin-style building facing the Kuninao Coast is both a cafe and plant-based dyeing shop. You can taste the specialties of Yamato Village in an atmosphere where you can fully feel the slower atmosphere of the island. You can also enjoy the taste of nature as the vegetables used in the dishes are from their organic home-grown vegetable garden. The owner is an artist who has had a solo exhibition in New York, and the shop offers dyeing experiences besides exhibiting and selling a variety of plant-based dyed products.

座敷席もあり子連れでも大丈夫ですが、量が少ないのでオススメしません。一人でやられているようで、デザートを食べに行くならいいと思います。

There is also a restaurant where you can experience the unique island cuisine of Tokunoshima in the garden, so you can enjoy the peaceful space as well as appreciate the plants. You can also enjoy shopping in the specialty section on the second floor of the store.

Snorkelers are taken to a spot five minutes by boat from the harbor, and thanks to careful support from the company's employees, even customers who cannot swim can enjoy snorkeling with confidence. The diving spot, which faces the open sea, has exceptionally clear water, allowing visitors to enjoy dynamic underwater landforms. Every year, from December to April, visitors have an opportunity to swim with the humpback whales that come here to raise their young.

This activity facility is located a 20-minute drive from Amami Airport. Here visitors can experience dorozome mud dyeing, the traditional method used to dye Amami Oshima tsumugi silk pongee. Participants can pick a pattern they want to try from among several samples and create their very own original color and design combination. The facility sells T-shirts, handkerchiefs, and other items separately for visitors to dye. The facility also provides long boots and aprons to borrow when dyeing, but even so prospective participants are recommended to wear clothing they won't mind if it gets stained. Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures.
