  • Chiringashima Island

    Chiringashima is an unpopulated island three kilometers in circumference floating in Kagoshima Bay. From March to October, a sandbar some 800 meters in length appears during the ebb of a spring or half tide, making it possible to walk to the island from the mainland. Because of this connection to the mainland, the island is also nicknamed the Love Knot Island and the sandbar is called the Ibusuki Chiririn Sand Road.

  • Nagata Inakahama Beach

    The beautiful weathered granite white sand of the beach is carried here from the Okudake Mountains of Yakushima Island by the Nagata River. This picturesque beach is also visited by sea turtles wandering the Pacific Ocean to lay their eggs.

  • Kirishima Shinsui Gorge

    A gorge located close to the Kirishima Jingu Onsenkyo hot spring village. Largely untouched by humankind, the gorge is colored by an abundance of lush, wild plants, giving it a mystical atmosphere. A walking path starting at the Kirishima City Tourist Information Center circles the gorge, and those walking the path can enjoy the beauty of the gorge itself as well as geological formations like column-shaped joints and the Kirishima Shrine lava rock. Various points along the path are outfitted with informational signs and observatories, and walkers can leisurely enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

  • Cape Kadokura

    This cape is located at the southernmost tip of Tanegashima Island. Stretching from the tip of cape to the Pacific Ocean on the eastern side, is Maenohama Nature Park. Inside the park is a statue of a rifleman called Teppoudenraikikouhi, Misaki Shrine and an observation deck which mimics the shape of an early European ship. The view looking down from the cliff edge is quite dynamic, and it is well-known as a scenic spot.

  • Chikura no Iwaya Cave

    This sea cave is located to the right-hand side of Hamada Beach. It is the largest sea cave in Tanegashima Island, and is said to be large enough for a thousand people to sit inside. Accessible only at low tide, visitors to the cave can enjoy the fantastic rock art created by nature. The interior of the cave is cool and comfortable even in the summer.

    White sand beaches and an emerald-green ocean with gradations that gradually change to a cobalt blue are what make Tomori Beach so special. It is also called Blue Angel because of the beauty of the clear blue waters. As it is on the way to the cape from the airport, look for the sign at the entrance to Tomori Beach. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the shallow waters that surround the rocks, but sufficient caution is required as rip currents can take swimmers out to sea.

  • Shoryudo Cave

    With a total length of 3,500 meters, this large limestone cave formed by underground water dissolving coral limestone was discovered in 1963. The view of countless silvery-white stalactites dangling from the ceiling is extraordinary, and the cave has a mysterious beauty that is said to be the best in the East. Approximately 600 meters is open to the public, and visitors can see stalactites and stalagmites with names such as Christmas Tree, Diamond Palace, and Crab Walk.

  • Mt. Karakuni

    This 1,700 meter-peak is the highest of the Kirishima Mountains. The origin of the mountain's name comes from the fact that it is high enough to be seen from the Korean Peninsula on days with fine weather. Volcanic like the surrounding mountains, a major characteristic is its 900 meter-wide and 300 meter-deep crater. Fir and Japanese red pine trees are clustered on the mountainside, and many shrubs near the top of the mountain. It is possible to see Kinko Bay, the crater lake Onami Pond and Sakurajima Island from Mt. Karakuni. In addition, the mountain climbing route goes around the outer edge of Onami Pond.

    This group of over 20 volcanoes spans both Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. It consists of stratovolcanoes like Mt. Shinmoe and Mt. Takachiho, pyroclastic cones like Mt. Karakuni, and crater lakes typified by Onami Pond and Oike Pond. Because it is an active volcano, care is necessary since part of the climbing route is closed during times of volcanic activity. The highest is the approximately 1,700 meter-tall Mt. Karakuni. Mt. Takachiho is famous for being climbed by Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo. The visitor center at the foot of the mountain is a popular spot for mountain climbers.

    Kagoshima Pref. Airashi Kajikichoukida 5266-1
    This waterfall is located in the Kida area of Kajiki-cho, Aira City. A large waterfall that 46 meters high and 43 meters wide, it is said to have been named because people from China who visited long ago said that it looked like the Dragon's Gate Falls in China. Known as a famous spot in Satsuma from long age, it has been chosen as one of the 100 Elections of the Waterfall in Japan. It is also illuminated in the nighttime.

    "This gorge is located in the Shukukubota area of Makizono-cho, Kirishima City. Situated along the Amori River, you can enjoy the geologically valuable nature of the Amori River basin from the colorful autumn leaves to the hollows called Giant's kettle which dot the bottom of the river. ""Shinkawa Keikoku Onsenkyo"" is along the valley, there are many small-scale hot spring facilities."

  • Saigo Takamori’s Hideout

    Located immediately by the Saigo Takamori Dokutsu-mae bus stop on the Kagoshima City View route, this cave is where Saigo Takamori spent his last days with the administrators of his private school during the final stages of the Satsuma rebellion after returning from fighting numerous battles around Kyushu in 1877. They spent the six days from September 19th through 24th in this cave. It is a vital historic landmark as the site where Saigo lead the Satsuma army at the Battle of Shiroyama against the government military until the end. It was designated as a historic landmark of Kagoshima City in 1974.

    This island located south of Cape Sata in Osumi Peninsula, Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the island is mountainous and has a rich and beautiful natural environment. The island and Shirakami Mountains were officially registered as Japan's first World Natural Heritage sites in 1993. Various scenic Yakushima destinations include: the Jomon Sugi cedar, estimated to be between 2170 and 7200 years old; Oko Waterfall, chosen as one of the 100 elections of the waterfall in Japan; Nagata Inakahama Beach, a breeding ground for loggerhead turtles; and Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen that can only be bathed in for two hours during low tide.

    This mountain has an altitude of approximately 215 meters, and is well-known for its similarity to Diamond Head in Hawaii. The summit can be reached by car, and visitors can enjoy the scenery of Ibusuki City and Kinko Bay that changes with the seasons. Alternatively, in the spring, around 600 Yoshino Cherry trees blossom here, and many people visit to see the cherry blossoms when they flower.

    This coast is located at the southern end of Amami Oshima Island. Naturally formed round stones cover the entire coast, and visitors can appreciate the sight and sound of the stones exposed to the ocean waves. It is famous as a power spot, and it is said that disaster will befall anyone who take the stones away, so it is forbidden to remove them. There is also a parking lot with toilets nearby, as many tourists visit this location.

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
