- A literature museum located a seven-minute walk from Asahidori Station on the Kagoshima City Tram bound for Kagoshima Station and leaving from JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station. Visitors can come in contact with literary works connected to Kagoshima through the museum’s permanent exhibit, which looks at 28 writers with a particularly strong link to the area. The adjoining Marchen Fairy Tale Museum is fun for adults as well as children, and visitors can feel like they’re in their very own fairy tale through exhibits such as trick art, playground equipment, and seasonal events and decorations. A joint admission ticket which includes entry to both facilities is available.

- "This shrine listed in the Engishiki Shrine Name Book stands on the western side of the Miyanoura River estuary. It enshrines Ippon Hoju Daigongen, the deity venerated by the traditional mountain worship religion. This shrine of high social standing is extremely revered as the tutelary shrine of the islanders of both Yakushima Island and Tanegashima Island. A number of items on the shrine's grounds including a pair of Deva king statues and the shrine's chozubachi (hand washing basin) have been designated as cultural properties of the Yakushima Town. The two characters that comprise the name ""Yaku"" have a connotation of ""ever-increasing divine salvation."" Consequently, the shrine is also called ""Sukui no Miya"" (shrine of salvation)."

- A historic tourist center built in 1974 located a one-hour drive from Amami Airport. The building stands two stories above ground and also has a basement floor and contains exhibits and videos on the poisonous habu snake. Established to convey the dangers of this animal, here visitors can learn about the history and ecology of habu. In addition to watching videos of habu and mongooses fighting, the museum has real live habu on display as well as specimens of animals eaten by habu. The facility’s souvenir and gift shop carries things like habu skin wallets and keychains as well as habu health foods.

- When the Kagoshima Spinning Mill was built in 1867 as Japan’s first Western-style spinning mill, this structure was built to house seven English engineers invited to provide guidance regarding the plant. The building is a rare extant example of early Meiji period Western-style architecture in Japan. The building was registered as a World Heritage site in 2015 under the collective “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.”

- A roadside station located a 15-minute drive from JR Sendai Station. The station is situated at the entranceway to the Ichihino Onsen, a renowned hot spring district. The station is outfitted with a tourist information center as well as a free foot bath perfect for easing away the fatigue of a weary traveler. The footbath is supplied by a colorless, odorless mildly alkaline spring whose waters are said to treat a broad array of ailments, including nerve pain, rheumatism, beriberi, joint inflammation, and women’s diseases. Other facilities include a casual Japanese diner-style restaurant and a farmer’s market which carries vaunted Satsumasendai City specialty products like pickles, porcelain, and bamboo work goods.

- A Shinto shrine believed to grant worshiper’s wishes as well as financial luck located in Kamichishiki-cho, Izumi City. Giant statues of cranes and a turtle monument dot the unique grounds, as well as a suzu bell dubbed Japan’s largest which was built to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of Emperor Heisei. Four meters tall, 3.4 meters in diameter, and weighing five tons, it is said that ringing it will enable one to realize one’s greatest ambition. The shrine also has “Japan’s smallest suzu”, a 1.5 millimeter in diameter suzu bell, on display.

The shrine boasts the largest bell, but the statues of the cranes are far more interesting. Worth visiting because it diverts from your usual temple impression.

- This gallery and shop is located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture and adjoins a Satsuma Kiriko cut glass factory. Satsuma Kiriko is known for the gradations of color created by making deep cuts into thick glass, and its intricate designs and gorgeous hues make this traditional art a delight to behold. Though the techniques went out of use at the beginning of the Meiji period, a movement to revive the art started in 1985, and it continues to be produced today. Visitors can purchase utensils, interior goods, souvenirs, and other items, and they can also observe the creation process. The old-fashioned building itself is a registered Tangible Cultural Property, making it a must-see.

スタバの隣に存在するのは鹿児島へ訪れる度に分かる存在感ある建物です。 中には薩摩切子の名工から若手の新作まで、製品が並びます。 その中に薩摩ボタン作家『薩摩志史』さんの作品を発見しました。 人気ある作家さんの為、ご本人のサイトでは完売であった作品が複数ありました。 垂水市の工房まで行くことなく購入でき、大変嬉しかったです。 数年間かけて探していたので、ご縁に感謝します。

- A roadside station situated along National Route 270 in Kinpo-cho. The stations local specialty products hall sells famous Kinpo Koshihikari rice, known as the rice harvested much earlier than other rice, and other local products, bento box lunches, and fresh vegetables. The adjoining restaurant can seat 80 and serves soba noodles made with local buckwheat flour among other dishes. The restaurant also offers a reservation required soba noodle making class. Class takers can enjoy their noodles on the spot or bring them home to share with friends and family.

南さつま市にある道の駅です。農業の町で米と蕎麦が特産とのことで蕎麦打ちを見ながら飲食できるレストランがありました。お土産で買った真っ黒な蕎麦の蜂蜜は独特な酸味がある複雑な味わいで個人的にはとても美味しかったです。その味から買う人が少ないのか、買おうとしたらお店の方が味見させてくれました。

- Calling itself Satsuma’s Little Kyoto with stone walls and hedges that zig-zag along the main road, the area features a group of beautiful samurai residences that makes the whole town seem like a miniature garden. Within the spacious district are seven gardens, and although Mori Shigemitsu’s garden is in the style of chisen-shiki (a garden that features a path around a pond), all of the rest are of the Karesansui Dry Garden variety, in which instead of water, rocks and gravel are used to represent a landscape of mountains and water. The gardens bear the influence of Ryukyu (Okinawa) and Chinese garden culture, and have been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

- This exhibit facility was created by the Ministry of the Environment after Yakushima Island become a World Heritage Site in 1993. It informs visitors about subjects including the charms of the Yakushima World Natural Heritage site and Yakushima National Park, the origins of the island's nature, and environmental conservation efforts on the island. Exhibits including informational panels about the World Heritage Site and sound gallery featuring a collection of audio recordings of Yakushima's unique nature allow visitors to enjoy deepening their knowledge of the environment. Many visitors to the center also visit the adjacent Yakusugi Nature Museum.

- This memorial museum to Saigo Takamori is just a 17-minute drive from the Chuo Station. This memorial was built in 1977 in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of his demise through donations from all over Japan. The interior of the two-story structure is constructed of wood and emanates a natural warmth of space. On the first floor is a diorama of Takamori's life and a film library, while the second floor displays materials about the Satsuma Rebellion and documents in Takamori's own handwriting. The museum shop sells books and unique goods related to Takamori, such as replicated hanging scrolls, wall decor, cute figurines of Saigo that make great souvenirs.

鹿児島駅から徒歩15分ほど。目の前に観光地循環バス「カゴシマシティビュー」のバス停もある。 入館料は200円。市電・市バスの一日乗車券を提示すると160円に割引となる。建物は2階建てで、その外観は石垣を模しているようだ。館内撮影不可。書状、鋸、草鞋などの遺品も展示しているが、西郷隆盛の生い立ちを紹介するジオラマがメインなので、通常の博物館や資料館のような展示を期待して訪れるとガッカリするかも。

- "This shrine commonly known as Homan Daimyojin enshrines Tamayori-hime, a goddess who appears in Japanese mythology. It holds an annual rice planting festival during which red rice called ""akagome"" or ""miine"" is planted to pray for a bountiful harvest. The festival has been registered as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Planting rice in ""osemachi,"" the shrine's rice field, and then eating a rice ball made with red rice harvested from the field last year is said to grant a year of sound health. The adjacent Homan-no-Ike, the largest pond on Tanegashima Island, is a mystical place visited by many wintering seafowl each year. Many people involved in the Japanese space program visit the shrine before rocket launches."

赤米伝来に纏わる言い伝えがあり、海宮から五穀の種子を持参し種子島に蒔いたと伝わる玉依姫を祭る神社だそうです。 入口近くには赤米の資料館もあり参考になります。日本では対馬経由で朝鮮半島から伝来したとされる米が日本全国に広がったようですが、南の方からもこの赤米が伝わっていたと初めて知りました。興味深いです。

- This crater lake has a circumference of 15 kilometers and reaches a depth of 233 meters, making it the largest such lake in Kyushu. Its clear, blue surface is a sight to behold, and a variety of seasonal flowers adorn the lakeside, making for an enchanting scene. The rape blossoms that bloom in January are especially gorgeous. The lake is also home to large eels that reach two meters in length and 50 centimeters in girth, but it is most famous for being the abode of the legendary monster “Issie.”

- This is only crane museum in Japan, built in the image of a parent crane nesting with an egg and a fledgling crane snuggling close. In the museum, visitors can learn about the ecology and history of cranes, and also enjoy videos and embalmed crane, as well as crane designed crafts. Additionally, there are museum lectures that are regularly held, which feature events for nature observation groups and other organizations.

ほぼ鶴だけに限定した施設としては、立派な建物に広い敷地です。こういった資料館・博物館の類いも、動物園なども好きな方ですが、鶴の仲間だけに限定した内容だとさすがに冗長感を感じました。鶴の飛来地や観察センターとも少し離れているのも難点。隣接した施設なら相乗効果もあるんですが。

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
