This is a roadside station in Nichinan City. Located in a central area of the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park, it provides tourist information regarding Miyazaki, sells special local products and also includes a restaurant. Locally grown fruit such as mango and a variety of citrus are also available for purchase. A limited number of the “mango roll”, with its mango scent, is also available. The restaurant offering a menu using Mediterranean vegetables is also popular.

Make sure to stop here. The food is tasty and you get a good view. We came here as a group of 5 on a tour down south Miiyazaki. It doesn’t look like much if you drive past, but it is. I drove past...

A small peninsula on which Japanese horses, also known as Misaki horses, graze. The horses leisurely feed on the peninsula’s grasses against a backdrop of gently rolling green hills and the blue sea, creating a beautiful and tranquil scene. The lighthouse standing on the tip of the peninsula is the southernmost lighthouse in Miyazaki Prefecture. The only lighthouse which can be entered and viewed by tourists in Kyushu, it also serves as viewing platform from which visitors can get a sweeping view of the surrounding gentle ocean.

"This swimming beach is located a 30-minute drive south of Horikiri Pass. A continuous stretch of white sands and white rest houses, the coast has even been selected for inclusion in the Selection of Best 100 Beach list. The beach is also situated close to such tourism destinations as Udo Jingu Shrine and Sunmesse Nichinan, and features such as fan palms growing along its length engender a south seas atmosphere. As the beach's waves are gentle, it's a great place for families with small children to play. Additionally, there's a ""seaborne marine pool"" created by square floats joined together on the surface of the ocean off the beach."

"Here, under the courteous guidance of an instructor, visitors can experience ""shikenhan"" archery, a type of entertainment enjoyed by the samurai of the southern Kyushu region. Shikenhan was practiced by military commanders at banquets during the Warring States period and became popular among samurai warriors during the Edo period; in the mid-Meiji period, it transformed into an amusement which was enjoyed with shochu at banquets. ""Shikenhan"" means about 8.2 meters and is the distance from the shooter to the target; while the bow is about 136 centimeters and target is roughly 13.7 centimeters - accordingly, everything used in the game is equal to measurement unites in length, hence its name of ""shihan."" Today, this form of archery has been designated an Intangible Cultural Property by the city."

This product shop is directly managed by the fishing co-op in “Meitsu Port” in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Visitors can purchase seasonal fresh seafood caught in the port famous for pole-fished bonito as well as processed products. There is also a restaurant offering seafood cuisine such as pan seared Nichinan pole-fished bonito on a box of rice which visitors can taste as they sear the fresh bonito fish.

    食事処の海鮮丼が人気なようでかなりな待ち客がいたので食べるのは断念しました。 併設の店舗で販売されているのは魚介類と加工品で農産物は皆無でした。 小規模な道の駅といった感じです。

"This local cuisine restaurant is situated on the road leading to Obijo-mae Street. Situated on the site of the government office for Obi Domain in the Edo period, the history-leaden building is also famously the only extant example of nagakura architecture in the former castle town of Obi. The restaurant is renowned for its ""Obiten,"" a traditional Obi regional variety of tempura consisting of minced fish mixed with tofu and miso before being deep-fried. Tender in texture and bearing a mild, slightly sweet flavor, once you take a bite, you'll never forget how delicious it is, and many tourists make their way to the restaurant time and again to enjoy the delicacy. The restaurant's ""Obiten Teishoku"" set meal is also popular, and comes with the signature Obiten as well as crab miso soup, an atsuyaki omelet, and other regional Obi dishes."

This is a semi-submersible sightseeing boat departing from Tonoura port, and through the glass bottom one can see a mass of beautiful coral reefs and multicolored tropical fish. On top, one can experience feeding sea birds. The sight of black kites swooping down to get their food is something to behold. The trip lasts around 45 minutes, with more departures on Sundays, public holidays, summer holidays and New Year’s holidays.

"This shochu ""dojo"" adjoins the breweries of Inoue-Syuzo and Sakuranosato-Syuzou. The dojo was opened with the aim of passing on the techniques of authentic shochu, a traditional industry in southern Kyushu. The dojo is a reproduction of a Meiji/Taisho period brewery and is made of Obi cedar, once a local specialty product. The dojo engages in the production of shochu year-round, making it possible for visitors to view the production process whenever they visit. Visitors can also participate in a shochu-making activity and blend together six varieties of shochu as they see fit to produce a one-of-a-kind, original shochu (advance reservation required)."

It was a great experience to see how sochu is made and to have an endless supply of all the varieties (looked like about 50) on hand to sample, with what seemed to be small bottomless cups. For the...

This eel restaurant is located a five-minute drive from Nichinan Station. Here customers can savor choice dishes maid exclusively with eel from Miyazaki Prefecture and Kagoshima Prefecture in a genuine Japanese atmosphere. The restaurant's herb eel, which has been featured in the media, is rich in high quality fat yet does not have the distinctive smell of river fish. Its excellent and mild flavor is so delicious, even people who don't like eel will find it tasty. The restaurant's tuna rice bowls, made with tuna from the local Aburatsu Port; and its broiled bonito rice boxes, a local Nichinan favorite; are also well-reviewed.

This restaurant is located a five-minute walk from Obi Castle. Operating out of a 120-year-old merchant home, the restaurant serves regional Obi cuisine. The restaurant's fishing pole-caught Nichinan bonito broiled rice box meal, ranked number one in a list of local Nichinan dishes, comes with fresh, raw bonito you broil yourself. Customers rave that the meal's bonito soy-based sauce, made with local Obi soy sauce, garlic, and ginger, has a light and delicious flavor. The meal also comes with an atsuyaki omelet, a famous Obi specialty; and nimono-style stewed seasonal vegetables, meaning with this one meal you can enjoy the tastes of Obi. The restaurant also serves anmitsu sweet beans and fruit in syrup, matcha green tea parfaits, and a full array of other desserts, making this the perfect place to stop and take a break while exploring Obi on foot, as well.

There's also a Japanese garden which is a recreation of one which existed in the distant Momoyama period, and a bronze statue of Komura Jutaro, a man who was born to a low level samurai family in Obi Domain and who later became a diplomate, making such achievements as the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth.
