    Located in the center of Aoshima Island, this Shinto shrine is dedicated to Hori no mikoto, Toyotama-hime no mikoto, and Shiozutsu no ookami, known in widely in Japan through the Japanese myth called “Yamasachihiko, Umisahihiko.” The shrine’s grounds are the entire island of Aoshima, a designated Special Natural Monument; in ancient times, the general public was prohibited from setting foot on the sacred grounds of the island. Worshippers were freely allowed to visit the island starting in the Meiji period, and today it is visited by many asking for luck in love and marriage, easy childbirth, safe travels, and safety while driving. The grounds are lush with tropical plants and a distinct, equatorial pervades the island. A 10-minute walk from Aoshima Station.

    The location of this shrine is at Aoshima Island which was linked by bridge to Aoshima area. There was little worth mentioning about this shrine except you need for pay for toilet services.

    A Shinto shrine dedicated to Japan’s first emperor, Emperor Jinmu. Many of the shrine’s buildings are registered as Tangible Cultural Properties, including the main shrine building, which is unusually made with whole cedar logs. The Shinko Festival, a 140 year old festival in which the god of the shrine is paraded outside, is held on a Saturday and a Sunday at the end of October and is one of Miyazaki Prefecture’s top festivals. Oshirafuji, the largest wisteria tree in the country and a designated Natural Monument, stands on the shrine grounds; mid-April is the best time to see it in bloom. A 10-minute walk from JR Miyazaki-Jingu Station.

    A part of the Miyazaki Prefectural Museum of Nature and History, the Minkaen, a collection of historic private homes, is the location of Important Cultural Properties such as the Former Fujita Residence and the Former Kuroki Residence. The buildings show what Japan’s ancient thatched roof houses looked like and were moved here from Gokase-cho in the northwestern area of Miyazaki Prefecture.

    This science museum has one of the world's largest planetariums. Outside is a 40-meter-tall full-scale mockup of an H1 rocket and inside is a replica of the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander Module. The planetarium shows three shows per day, each approximately 50 minutes long. The shows explore that evening's night sky with explanations from popular characters from space-themed anime. There's also hand on exhibitions, including a simulation where you can try controlling a spaceship, making this a great place to bring kids to. The museum is a two-minute walk from JR Miyazaki Station.

    This Japanese sweet shop is famous for its specialty, the nanjakora daifuku (what the heck is this daifuku). The nanjakora daifuku is coarse sweet red bean paste, Japanese chestnut paste, strawberries, and cream cheese wrapped in gyuhi, a type of rice dough. Its uniqueness brought it wild popularity and now the shop also offers a nanjakora choux, a creampuff made with Ogura cream, Japanese chestnut paste, strawberries, and cheese. The cheese manju steamed buns, a Miyazaki favorite, are also popular.

The shop sells Miyazaki specialties such as local grilled chicken skewers, hyuganatsu pudding, and ripe mango juice; as well as shochu, local beers, and other liquors; and crafts like kagura masks. You can also sample foods and purchase tickets to performances here, making it the perfect place to find a souvenir. A 15-minute walk from Miyazaki Station. If traveling by car, you can park in the prefectural office’s number 1 or 2 visitor parking lot.

    宮崎県庁のすぐ近くにある宮崎のお土産物屋さんです。県庁を見学した後に立ち寄りました。 繁華街からレンタサイクルで行きました。歩いて行くにはちょっと遠いので、車やバス利用が便利かと思います。 スイーツやお酒、地元の食材など種類豊富です。スイーツはやはりマンゴー味の物が多かったです。宮崎駅や宮崎空港でもお土産は買えますが、駅も空港も行かれない方はこのショップもお勧めです。

    Aoshima Island, which has been designated as a National Special Natural Monument, is a small island with a circumference of 1.5 kilometers that is setting of the Umisachi-Yamasachi Legend. Aoshima Jinja Shrine, which is surrounded by the unusual rock formation known as the Devil’s Washboard, enshrines the deities Yamasachihiko, Toyotama-hime, and Shiozutsu no Okami who advised Yamasachihiko to go to the palace of Watatsumi no Kami, and is a popular shrine to pray for matchmaking. The area is inhabited by many spermatophytes and pteridophytes, and is a beautiful small island that still has untouched nature.

    These are strangely shaped rocks in wavelike formation surrounding Miyazaki Prefecture’s small island of Aoshima. These appeared above the water’s surface due to changes in the undersea rock’s geological features, and their present appearance is a result of erosion from the ocean water. At low tide visitors can enjoy a view of the approximately eight-kilometer shoreline from Aoshima Island to Kinchaku Island in the south. The area was designated a National Natural Monument in 1934.

    Japan’s first wax figure museum dedicated to Japanese myths located on the grounds of Aoshima Jinja. The museum presents 12 segments from Japanese myths in an easy to understand way using 30 wax figures, including the descent of the sun goddess; the story “Yamasachihiko, Umisahihiko,” which relates to the deities the shrine is dedicated to; and the conquest of Japan by Emperor Jinmu. The museum also displays wax figures of the Seven Gods of Fortune and former Yomiuri Giants baseball coach Shigeo Nagashima, who frequently went camping in Miyazaki.

    A museum located in the Saitobaru Tomb Area, a collection of some of Japan’s oldest tombs. Now a designated Special Historic Landmark Park, the area is dotted with over 300 tombs. The museum displays artefacts from the tombs and visitors can learn about the formation of the geography of southern Kyushu and the mysteries of the tombs from a diverse array of materials. The Ancient Life Interactive Center’s hands on exhibits, where visitors can ake a hands-on class about making haniwa and dogu clay figures, is particularly popular. From the third-floor restaurant, you can enjoy a cup of tea while gazing out over the Saitobaru Tomb Area, famed for its seasonal blossoms, particularly its cherries in spring.

    Approximately a ten-minute drive from the Saito Interchange, these burial mounds are scattered around Chigogaike Park. Over 300 burial mounds remain over a very large area 2.6 kilometers from east to west and 4.2 kilometers north to south, and preservation activities are being conducted as a special historic park from its academic value. In the park, besides the burial mounds such as the Oni no Iwaya Kofun that can be seen, there is also the Saitobaru Archaeological Museum of Miyazaki Prefecture. In addition, it is a popular flower spot with cherry blossoms and rape blossoms in the spring, and cosmos in the autumn.

    Sun Beach Hitotsuba, which is the only artificial beach in Miyazaki Prefecture, is located around 10 minutes' drive from JR Miyazaki Station, or can also be reached by taking the Hitotsuba Toll Road; the Beach is immediately adjacent to the Marina-mae Exit. The beach is divided into two zones: North Beach and South Beach. South Beach has gentle waves and is suitable for families with small children. North Beach is a dedicated area for marine sports such as stand-up paddle-boarding and sea-kayaking, and for beach volleyball. North Beach also has an area for barbecues; spaces for having a barbecue can be booked at the Beach Office, which also sells and rents out barbecue equipment.

    This is a shrine located in Tsuno Town, Koyu County. The shrine has a very long history, as it was founded six years before of the enthronement of Emperor Jimmu, who was the first emperor of Japan and Onamuchi-no-mikoto is the main deity. The god Daikoku-sama is enshrined here so it is said that the shrine is good for marriage and flourishing posterity, healing illness, and prosperity in business. There are festivals in August and December. A mikoshi (portable shrine) is paraded around in the summer festival in August, and Kagura (Shinto music and dancing) is performed in the winter festival in December.

    This is the site of a mountain castle in Higashimorokata County, Miyazaki Prefecture. The castle has been reconstructed using local timber and now stands on the castle site. There is a “History Museum” in the castle exhibiting displays of the history of Aya, swords and armor. “Aya International Craft Castle” is also on the site, and it offers traditional Aya craft products, as well as hands-on pottery, hand weaving and dyeing classes.

On the other side of the bridge is a two-kilometer-long nature trail, the perfect opportunity to enjoy a walk in the woods.

    A Japanese confection shop located in Daiocho, Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture renowned for its cheese manju buns, a famed sweet from Miyazaki. The shop’s cheese manju grew in popularity after becoming a favorite souvenir for cabin attendants to bring back from flights to the area and Warabe has even been featured in various media. Distinguished by a crisp and simple crust made with margarine, sugar, and flour, these sweet manju buns are filled with cream cheese in place of the standard red bean paste. Made entirely by hand, Warabe frequently sells out its stock early in the day. If you absolutely want to get your hands on a Warabe cheese manju, be sure to make a reservation in advance.

    This Western restaurant is located on the Chuo-dori street in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Its owner was a chef at “Ogura,” a restaurant which is said to have invented Chicken Nanban, since the beginning. The Special Chicken Nanban on the restaurant’s menu is made with a chicken, which is prepared that very day, from which only the breast meat is used for the exquisite meal. Sweet vinegar and a homemade tartar sauce are poured onto the soft breast meat, creating a flavor that is quite addictive. The restaurant has a retro interior with primarily counter seats.
