Kirishima and the mountains of Kyushu, visitors to the area can also enjoy seasonal flowers such as rapeseed and poppies in spring and cosmos in fall. The shop at this rest area sells Miyazaki gifts and souvenirs like charcoal grilled meats and shochu. The rest area's flavorful coffee brewed with fresh ground beans, and its rich soft serve ice cream are also popular.

A Shinto shrine which records state was established in the land where Emperor Jinmu was born during the reign of Japan's fifth emperor, Emperor Kosho. According to one theory, it is the oldest shrine in the old castle town area. The shrine is primarily dedicated to Emperor Jinmu and derives its name from his childhood name (Sano-no-Mikoto). The approach to the shrine, lined with beautiful cedar trees, is said to be the longest perfectly straight shrine road in the country. The shrine was later relocated to its current location, and it is believed that the Ojibaru Shrine subordinate shrine, which is located around a kilometer west and enshrines a stone said to grant worshippers safe childbirth, is located where Sano Shrine originally stood.

Sano is one of the bigger shrines in the area and a lovely spot to visit and re-energize. The long path leading to the main gate goes through the forest, and it looks like its sliced right out of a...

This ranch is at the foot of Mt. Kirishima, a little east of Takachiho Farm. It lets you view goats, rabbits, and lots of free range chickens. "This soba noodle restaurant stands on the Kirishima Bird Line. In a space overflowing with warm wood furnishings, the restaurant serves choice, handmade soba noodles. The restaurant makes its noodles by naturally drying buckwheat, grinding it into flour each morning using a stone mill, and mixing it with spring water before rolling out the noodles by hand. The restaurant offers two varieties of noodles, ""nama soba"" (made with a 90% buckwheat flour and 10% wheat flour blend); and unique, southern Kyushu-style ""inaka soba"" (made using only buckwheat flour). Customers can enjoy these noodles along with a tasty soup flavored with dried bonito, dried kelp seaweed, dried young sardine, and dried shitake mushrooms. The restaurant also sells a variety of homemade foods such as buckwheat flour and soba noodles for home use, and breads made with natural yeast."

The homemade soba is delicious, and the atmosphere of the entire place is just lovely. They also sell their signature sauces, homemade bread, and other local produce.

    Miyazaki Miyakonojo-shi Yamanokuchicho Yamanokuchi 2921-1
This museum was built in 1993 in order to preserve and display ningyo joruri (puppet theater) puppets, a form of traditional culture passed down through the ages in Yamanokuchi Fumoto. Ningyo joruri puppet theater involves the performance of stories by interweaving shamisen music, spoken dialogue, and puppets; the museum contains exhibits on ningyo joruri and also holds scheduled performances four times a year. The art form of a type of ningyo joruri called ko-joruri has been passed down in the Yamanokuchi-cho area unchanged for some 300 years. Preserving and passing on the ancient forms of the bunya ningyo dolls used in the plays, the museum is one of around just four such facilities found in the entire country. The museum's scheduled performances consist of bunyabushi-style ningyo joruri theater, whose traditions date back to the Edo period; and kyogen comic farce interludes which mix in bits of the local dialect for added humor and color.

An unmissable highlight of Kyushu, Miyazaki prefecture satisfies nature lovers with its dramatic gorges cut out of rugged cliffs, leading into waterfalls and beaches of green-blue water popular among surfers.
