Oita Pref. Yufushi Yufuinchoukawakami Tanaka 2850-5
A Japanese restaurant opened in 2013 by Yufuin Food Research Institute representative Ken’ichi Shin’ei. Here you can enjoy cuisine made with delicious Yufuin vegetables. Particularly popular are the Bungo beef, Kanmuri chicken, and mountain and ocean-themed “awase-bako” (boxed) meals which hide the local seafood dish known as “Ryukyu.” An eight-minute walk from JR Yufuin Station.
  • Yufu Mabushi Shin Ekimae Branch
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Oita Pref. Yufushi Yufuinchoukawakita 5-32F
A restaurant famous for its mabushi gohan, rice topped with meat. Shin offers mabushi gohan topped with Yufuin eel, Oita Bungo beef, and Toyo shamo chicken raised in Yufuin’s Shonai-cho neighborhood. Preparing its rice in proper earthenware pots, diners are encouraged to enjoy their first serving of lavishly topped mabushi gohan plain, the second with condiments of their choice, and the third chazuke-style with dashi. The shop’s hearty pickles, served as appetizers and palate-cleansers between courses, will make sure you go home satisfied. A one-minute walk from Yufuin Station on the Kyudai Main Line.

This restaurant is located on the grounds of the Kamenoi Besso inn on the shore of Lake Kinrin. Identifiable by its thatched roof, the restaurant is open to non-guests as well. Here you can enjoy superb cuisine crafted using seasonal vegetables, river fish, Japanese black beef, and other ingredients from Kyushu; along with a view of a scrupulously maintained garden. The restaurant offers around four to five meals at any given time. The popular lunchtime Irodori-zen meal comes with exquisitely seasoned takikomi gohan rice, a hassun tray of dishes, soup, and dessert. The charcoal broiled beefsteak donburi rice bowl is topped with Oita wagyu beef redolent with smoky charcoal flavor.

Service was ok. Bungo beef meals were great. Location is superb in the middle of lush greenery near Kinrinko lake. Reservation needed though. Will come back next time!

This Japanese restaurant adjoins the Yufuin Hananomai inn in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. A reservation-only establishment, it can be used by non-guests as well. The restaurant's special beef bento box meal is particularly popular and is made with tender Bungo beef sirloin. The meal can also be ordered as a set which comes with two sides, miso soup, pickles, coffee, and dessert. Other menu highlights include country-style seasonal hotpot meals, and a Japanese black beef loin steak meal. Enwrapped in the restaurant's quiet atmosphere, you can enjoy a meal that's a little on the luxurious side.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
